Hi,

Im new here, so bare with me!

I wonder if anyone can help? In my bathroom my extractor fan used to turn on at the same time when you pull the light cord.

Today, i put a new light up and when i removed the base there was 6 wires coming from the ceiling, one set of 3 had black, blue and a yellow/green wire. The other set of 3 had red black and yellow/green.

I wired the light using the black, blue and green wires. However, now only the light works, so im left without a fan!

How do i manage to get them both working? Do i have to wire both red wires to the one red wire in the light fixing?

The light fixing itself only has 3 sockets (im not sure of the technical term)

Sorry if this doesnt make any sense - as you can tell im new to electrics!!

Can anyone help? Thank you!

(ps thanks for having me! :D)

Now there we go, the guy offers you advice, and all you can do is be bloomin nasty.

I read your post and thought you were a 'male chicken' for messing with stuff you know nothing about, lets just stuff all the red wires together.

Chances are there was a live. switch live, neutral and an earth, these need to be correctly wired.

Hope you realise your house insurance may be void for messing with electrics in the bathroom.

what the heck are you talking about mate? i havent been nasty, i was merely pointing out sarcasm, and i didnt "stuff all red wires together" i asked if it was possible, but then i asked my mate who happens to be an electrician who said what i needed to do.

i dont think i'll be coming on these forums again, all i was after was some advice and i get shot down in flames, nice way to give a friendly welcome

If we can get back to talking about fans in a bathroom..........
Does the regs state that the 3 pole isolating switch (required to protect the person carrying out maintenance on said fan) must be accessible in the room that the fan is fitted?
If the fan(s) are fitted in a roof space (in-line) does it still require the 3 pole switch to be in the room or should it (must it) be in the roof space near the fan?

If a 2 pole isolator was not in my line of sight i would definitely isolate and lock off the whole circuit before working on part off it. TBH i would probs do that regardless... coming across too much creative wiring recently.
