Hi. I would like to install a garbage disposal. There is no plug under the sink. Next to the sink is my dishwasher which is hard wired. Can I use the wiring going to the dishwasher to wire a 2 plug box? I would then be able to install a power cable on the dishwasher and plug my garbage disposal into the newly made outlet. Is this right? Thanks in advance.

A bit old hat. Parents had one in a kitchen installed in the 80’s. Can only use for veg waste. Quicker to use normal bin or put out for compost. Got rid of it years ago. Each to their own though.
Should be no problem changing a single socket to double but you’d need to be sure the circuit is capable / designed to take the additional load of the additional piece of equipment.

Thank you for replying. I actually don't have any outlet. I wanted to take the wiring that comes out of the wall and goes directly to the dishwasher (hardwired?) And disconnect that from the dishwasher. I would then use that wiring to make a two outlet box. After that I can install a power cable on the dishwasher with a normal plug to plug into the new outlet I would make. That would also leave me one more plug on the outlet to plug in the garbage disposal. I understand electricity, however not when it comes to houses. I'm a car mechanic. Is what I want to do safe and is it even a good idea?

They're very common in the US though.

You could get a feel for the circuit capability by looking at the size of the fuse that protects the circuit and also how many other outlets and pieces of equipment are already connected to it. In principle your proposal is probably ok but I’d double check with a US spark who will be up to speed on your wiring regulations.

Ok, that's a good idea. I believe the whole kitchen is on one circuit. I don't really ever use the dishwasher either. I'm just concerned of what I'm thinking is somehow unsafe. Thanks again

Yes you can install a receptacle but it should be on a dedicated 20 amp breaker. When you do this install a GFCI receptacle and you shouldn’t run them both at the same time. Good luck
