vicar

Morning all,

This looks like the place to get some correct info for my building project.

Hence the name Vicar we are renovating an old church.

My question is i have 97 m2 upstairs and would like to know if i can have 1 ring main to service the 4 upstairs bedrooms & gallery hallways my electrician said i should be splitting it into 2 rings i cant find out if it has to be split or not as some of the wiring on this ring is allready done by myself and was unaware i would need to split the ring its a pain as some of the walls are allready plasterboarded.

Is this nesessary i.e a limit to how many sockets on a ring or area to total sockets?

The downstairs area is 180 m2 and we have split the rings into 3 he said it was due to the loading on 1 ring main & long cable runs.

The kitchen will be a separate ring.

Also here in scotland the height of our switches should be between 900 & 1100 mm from FF level my question is what about the underfloor heating controls and the controls for the HRV system or any other control panels do they have to be at the same height or can they be higher on the walls.

I know that the switch & socket heights are for disabled access but cant imagine that the switches and controls would all have to go in the same row on the wall? or do they my electrician thought controls could be at 5ft high from FF level to pass building control but im not sure & thought i would ask here before i called my unhelpfull council.

Many thanks in advance for any advice,

Rgds.........

The Vicar.

Thanks perfect for what im needing.:)

Regarding the setting out on the ceiling i hear you cant have spots to close together or to far away and i understand its personal choice.
As the ceiling is open any wiring configuration will be possible i was just after some ideas if anyone has so i can explore a little before we sheet up the ceiling.

I was told 500mmm from a wall/corner & 800mm apart no more but thought this was to many too close i suppose it depends on the effect one is trying to create with the type of lights put in we are planning on using LEDs...

Distance from wall/corners for spot lights will be in the manufacturers info this is due to heat build up on walls ect and lit subjects (even if using leds still go for worst case as leds may not prove adequite ) Heights ect dont apply as its a refurb and not a newbuild

Just an aside as its a church you state 4 Bedrooms? is there a kitchen, shower, bathroom ect to consider

In the living areas we have 2.7m ceilings and in the open spaces from floor to roof its 10m the lighting in the higher areas will have to be uplighted from a reasonable height to allow for bulb changes.

In the hallways we have wired up for spots under the gallery walkways and uplighters in the upper landing areas as we have sloping ceilings spots in the bedrooms and uplighters.
Again in the bathrooms spots.
Wall lights in the lounge with wall lights uplighting.

Some large wall lights for the kitchen area as the roof is again 10m from the floor to ceiling with velux roof lights banked in the roof......when the slaters return

Have decided to go for click mini grid switches as the switching is mega and requires grid type fixtures.
