Hey guys

Complete newb here - our bathroom had a fan which was connected to the light and timed to run over. All worked okay except the fan bearings gone so am trying to replace.

I took the old one down without looking at wiring, and have fitted new one as per instructions. However when turn light switch on the fan doesn't start and the shower light is not working now. Presume it's because I have a brown wire 'spare'... Does anyone know what I should do here with this wire?

Thank you for your help... Pic attached! Jimmy

Jimmy the best advice here has to be "get a sparky in"
Electricity can and does kill mate, remember the good old US and A used to use it to get rid of criminals. The job will not cost you very much

I'm not trying to rain on your paade here, actually I kind of admire your willingness to have a go but sometimes things are best left to the professionals

Post up your location and one of us will be able to help you

it's a multiple choice question 4 choices.

1. it will work. 2. it won't work. 3. it goes bang. 4. call a sparky.

i know what the correct answer is.

i would suggest that the flex is a switch feed and switch wire....from a pullcord or wallplate........so the brown should go into the perminant line and the blue...which would require brown sleeving (identification of conductors)..should go go to the switched line on the fan.....

Hold your horse a second Jimmy. First of all i'd get your cable routed into the fan correctly. How you going to get the cover on?

To me looks like its been bodged on the original instal. Those cables you have there could be anything, think you will maybe have to trace them back and see what they're connected to.

Jimmy, please don't connect anything. Those cables could be anything from that photo and you mustn't just try different combos. One of those is permanently live even with your light switched off.
Get in an electrician, shouldn't take them long.

Jimmy, post your location and some kind hearted forum member may pop round for the small cost of a hot brew. Personally I would rather give up an hour of my own time for free than see a potentially dangerous situation left.

It would normally be the outer terminals where the flex of the pendant drop connect.
