Hi,

I am replacing some old halogen fittings with pendant light fittings in my front room. There are two fittings that are operated from two switches. When I took off the old fittings, the arrangement was so dissimilar to the guidance I had that I did not take a note of the layout and proceeded to follow the instructions. However I had a spare wire! After researching, it looks like one of the fittings has two 2-core and earth cables and a 3-core and earth cable, the other has one of each.

Can anybody advise how the wires should be arranged in the fitting? The wire colours are:

2-core and earth - Red, Black and Earth
3-core and earth - Red, Blue, Yellow and Earth.

I'm at a loss as, whenever I try at the moment, the switches in the front room no longer work and the light switch in the kitchen now operates the front room while the kitchen lights do not work at all!!

Cheers
David

the red/yellow/blue is for 2 way switching. without seeing the job. it's impossible to advise. honestly, it's time to call in an expert to sort it out. i.m not just saying this, but it's going to take you ages trial and error and could even cause danger to you and yours. a good sparks can sort it out in an hour.

SMB - difficult to tell from your username to be honest!

oldtimer - I'll get a picture up when I get home from work this evening, hopefully that will help.

ukpablo - "thanks" for your insight. I look forward to your dissertation on living an entire life without ever having tried anything new and needing assistance from a more knowledgeable community. I have to wonder how full your day/life is that you can trawl this site looking for opportunities to belittle and undermine people. I already know that I've bitten off more than I can chew but it was worth a go.

oh come on, get a sense of humour!!!!
Do u not think that messing with electric when u have little knowledge is just a bit dangerous??!!!
if u dont kill urself, u could well burn ur house down!
Like i said, there is sometimes a bit more to it than u think to just replacing a light fitting!
Good luck all the same, and if i offended u than i apologise.

don't think offence was taken mate, certainly not by me. just think the guy don't need shooting down in flames. some of 'em do, those that won't listen. esp. the DIYers that want to rewire a kitchen by picking our brains. it's amazing some will spend ÂŁoodles on a nice new shiny kitchen/bathroom then want the electrics installing for next to nowt.

i know bud, re-read his post after his comment, felt bad for the guy, so duly apologised, i dont mean to offend but alot of people as u said come on here for quick fix advice after trying to mess with things that they do not understand. I hope the guy gets it sorted and i will choose who i rib next time in a post!!..............honest:) lol

Apology accepted Pablo and thanks telectrix! I am happy to admit I underestimated what was involved - I had done a similar change in my daughter's bedroom quite easily but that was only one light with a single switch and I didn't appreciate there would be a difference. I'll hopefully be able to get a picture on here later.
