Discuss wiring rcbo in dual rcd cu in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I'm thought I read somewhere that the smoke alarms need their own circuit if the lighting circuits are on a rcd? is this right?

Think this is one of those that are contradicted down the line. Somewhere is says you can take it off a lighting circuit, somewhere it says it can't be RCD protected because of nuisance tripping, though I dont understand where you would get nuisance tripping?

The recommendation for not putting fire detection on an RCD is mainly down to full, dedicated systems and not domestic smokes.

If that makes sense.

You have no option than to put the circuit with the downstairs lighting for example. You cannot really have an RCBO on an already RCD protected CU. There will be no discrimination between the two.

The "best" way would be to substitute one of the RCD's with the necessary number of RCBO's. As that provides the most flexibility and safest option IMHO.

I always use the hall loop to supply the smokes loop in domestic. It's the alternative recommended way, to me best as it stop anyone using the breaker to turn off nuisance trips and stops them hooking the extra wire out of the breaker if you piggyback into a lighting breaker.

Im with hifly use the lighting circuit as you will always know if its tripped, where as if it on its own rcbo u might not notice that its tripped, Nic accept it as well
