Auger bits are the best way forward, but if I have to use a flat spade bit, I dip it in a coolent after each hole, water will do. Not to much pressure, high speed.

We use these from CK in an angle drill so plenty of torque with low speeds and they fly through.

Drools :drool5:

Bosch ones are quite good, the other ones from drill makers brands are sometimes made in the far east in big cheap boxsets or intended to be sold for wallies and people over price them due to the brand name printed/stamped on them.....so the buyer thinks they are getting quality because of the name and price....but they are really intended as giveaway items for freebies which shops are meant to give away with drills but often end up selling separately ....

I used standard armeg spade bits and all three twisted up on the blade itself while drilling standard joists (not into a knot or nail), i chucked em back at the wholesaler never seen such poorly manufactured crap, my drill has torque control too so they weren't been pushed too hard, i bought 10 of their 5.5mm sds masonary bits and went through the lot in 2days as they kept snapping -some just past the tip and the rest where the shaft thickens so went and bought a few bosch and 3 months later on same job still got both bits and were alot cheaper too.

Not saying this is everyones experience but im staying well clear of armeg in future until they field test and improve their own products.

The new Armeg bi-metal wood beavers have better resistance to nail strikes. I tried them Elex and they resisted standard nails very well, but the Armeg staff almost fainted when I tried their bits with some masonry nails I picked up from the Orbix stand.:devil2: They still managed a couple of strikes before becoming noticeably dull.

auger bits are a lot better than spade bits

a guy i was working with killed his batteries and no power in house.

put the auger bit in dewalt impact driver and it went through the joists like a hot knife through butter

(ive hit nails, dry walls etc and auger bit has survived)
