Evening all. My neighbour just got me out the shower as he has no lighting. He's got an old wylex consumer unit with retro fit MCB, the one with the red button to trip.

Anyway after removing the cover found nothing between L-N and L-CPC out going on both lighting circuits, but power on the busbar. Now I'd have to conclude both mcbs were knackered, but any ideas why both would go at the same time?

Could a voltage surge fry one of these older type MCBS?
Does it smell of burning at all?

Don’t suppose there’s another 5A one you can swap in until you are asked to upgrade the board
No unfortunately not. They asked me to upgrade the consumer unit, which I'll do for them as and when but for the time being they are going to pick up a replacement 6A from good old screwfix. Just seems strange both have gone up the shoot.

Any testing carried out? apart from concluding that both MCBs are duff? just asking.
