Check yourself Shoeman, .....If the earth conductor is coming from the sheath of the main incoming cable ...It's TN-S. If you have an earth cable exiting from the incoming cut out fuse box then it is a PME. If you have neither, and just have earth conductors disappearing under the floor boards or other the chances are it's a TT system.... check and let us know to be able to help you further!!!

Approx 2 years ago whilst having major building work done the builder cut through the cable feeding myn house as it was only 6" maximum in depth below my lawn.
The supplier came within 2 days and repaired break.
Present Electrician has contacted supplier, but as yet waiting for reply.
I myself contacted the supplier this morning, but still waiting for asomeone to turn up.
Electrician has installed 300ma Rcd on the incoming cable.

We are I suppose at the mercy of these suppliers.

I believe it came from an old clamp on the sheath before Cu was fitted then a new Earth clamp was put on the incoming cable.

many thanks for your help

Sounds very probable, that the joint made under your lawn has broken down on the sheath side of things.

...As direct buried cables should be at a depth of 600mm, your DNO will remain responsible for any damage or repairs to that cable, if it's still at only 6'' depth!!

DNO`s equipment doesn`t fall under the jurisdiction of BS7671 - they have their own interpretation of what constitutes adequate burial depth.
However, no jointer`s gonna leave a supply cable running under a lawn at 6" without recommending a improvement...you say it was repaired 2 years ago - have they never been back?

Yes they Do, and you'll find it's very similar to BS7671, check for yourself!! No-one said it was still at that depth, but if it IS, then my statement stands. I bet there's a very good chance mind, that it is still way outside there own stipulated minimum burial depth!! lol!!

It does indeed mostly mirror BS7671 - & I wasn`t disagreeing with your comments, merely conscious that on occasions they do blur distinctions "due to practicalities" in a way we would struggle to justify.
But i did get the impression from the OP that it had been jointed in its original position. Of course, that may have been a false one, but I suspect we won`t ever know, as re-reading his last post, I`d guess he has the answer he required & has disappeared into the ether.

I`m curious...how do The Regs in your neck of the woods stand comparison with our own - i suspect they may well use the BS or a version of it?
