Blotches / Stains / Dark Patches appearing on White Tiles? Discussion Thread

Blotches / Stains / Dark Patches appearing on White Tiles?

Hi

I have noticed dark patches appearing on some of the white tiles in my shower / bathroom. The patches appear blueish/purpleish and are quite noticeable. Just wondering what the cause of this is likely to be, and what can be done to remediate? My initial thoughts are that there is water behind the tile (possibly from decayed grouting) but have never come across this before.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks...

Fix-a-floor. For fixing tiles with voids. Discussion Thread

Fix-a-floor. For fixing tiles with voids.

Got to use this fix-a-floor stuff today. What a load of... rubbish, and that's being kind.
One loose tile 300 x 300 and the grout cracked a bit.
Drilled eight 4mm holes in 6mm grout lines. Cut the nozzle for a snug fit. Injected it in.
Only about 5% went in, while most just came out the same hole. What a f'ing mess.
Ended up lifting tile spent about a half an hour cleaning up then relayed with adhesive.
Stuff has the consistency of melted ice...

Gap between ceiling and tiles Discussion Thread

Gap between ceiling and tiles

Hello, we’ve just had a bathroom tiled. A 1.5cm gap is at the top, between the tiles and ceiling, which has been grouted. I wondered if this was normal? I think it looks slightly odd and worry that such thick grout will crack and look bad over time. I wondered if there was any way of fixing it? Many thanks!

My son and tiling training. Discussion Thread

My son and tiling training.

Hi guys. My son, 16, not enjoying school or college has been working with me for a bit of money doing some grouting, sealing, cleaning and the odd bit of cutting(supervised of course). Talking to him today we mentioned apprenticeships. This is the first time Ive heard him interested in maybe learning about tiling but for the life of me I cant find an apprenticeship for tiling in West Sussex. Is it true that for such a specialised job that we do there isnt...

Trying to source an obscure size octagonal tile

I hope you can help we are trying to source (for a match) some 300mm by 300mm matte white taco tiles with a black insert. We are finding this hard as a lot of the websites we find seem to have 200mm by 200mm or 316mm by 316mm.

I have attached some photos for reference below. We have one box we have found in the loft and it specifically says 30 cm (on the ripped off piece of cardboard that was near it!). Although when we measure they...

Wall grout for shower Discussion Thread

Wall grout for shower

Hi,

Just wondering what the general consensus is with grout for a shower. I have epoxy grouted the floor but now that I'm about to tackle the wall I'm unsure which way to go with the grout. I know epoxy is the best overall grout to use for a bathroom or any kind of wet room, but my conundrum is that we want a pure white grout, not shady or and kind of light grey finish which I am led to believe is mainly the case with all white epoxy grouts because of the...

Required Tiling Standards | Wall and Floor Tiling

As someone who does some tiling but is not a professional tiler, could someone tell me if there is a British Tiling Standards which specifies allowable errors in tiling work? i.e. all tiles must be laid with a lippage of less than 0.5% of the longest length or something similar?

I appreciate this isn't a huge question but I need to find out the answer reasonably quickly and would appreciate any help.

Many thanks!

Plastering and tiling over existing tiles Discussion Thread

Plastering and tiling over existing tiles

Some helpful advice/opinion would be appreciated... Existing tiles on walls, some of the walls we want new tiles on and others we want plastered ready for painting. Can anyone tell me how much longer it would take to remove the tiles and make good the wall then plaster and/or re-tile compared to leaving the old tiles on and plastering or tiling over them? If you could give me pros/cons to both approaches that would be great too! Thank you...

Riven Slate: use sand/cement or adhesive - is there a definitive answer Discussion Thread

Riven Slate: use sand/cement or adhesive - is there a definitive answer

Hi - my builders bedded 10-12 mm brazilian riven slate on a sand cement mix. The base below was secure concrete laid a few weeks before. This was a new kitchen floor job, brand new extension.

I don't think they've done a very good job because many sound hollow when walking on them and a few were loose within days. The grouting is uneven in thickness and there are some very lippy bits. The chippy came in to do the...

Painting red quarry tiles grey - prime or no prime!?? Discussion Thread

Painting red quarry tiles grey - prime or no prime!??

Hi there,

We have red quarry tiles in our indoor entrance hall and my wife would like to paint them grey to complement a renovation we are doing.

We have chosen Rustoleum washable matt floor tile paint but my question is should we be applying a primer first? (It says that priming is not necessary on the tin but I’m not convinced!!)

I’ve heard that it’s wise to use oil or latex based primers but I really am not too sure...

KITCHEN FLOOR STAINS FROM GLUE TRAPS Discussion Thread

KITCHEN FLOOR STAINS FROM GLUE TRAPS

I have found that glue traps can leave stains(orange/yellow) on kitchen floors. Obviously, I have to put something under the traps like newspaper. The bottoms of the traps are plastic and all I can think of is that the summer time heat may have caused some kind of reaction between the plastic and the floor. I have tried baking soda and white vinegar, but it does not help much.
What else can I use to remove the stains from the kitchen floor...

Concrete subfloor leveling issue Discussion Thread

Concrete subfloor leveling issue

Hi -

I ripped up laminate flooring on a concrete subfloor. It was my first DIY project and instead of using mortar to even out any glue that was stuck on or sand off, I used a thin layer of self leveler. I mixed it correctly but for some reason still wasn’t level so I tried grinding it with an angle grinder attachment. Made it worse. Poured again. Also made it worse.

I ripped out the existing vanity as seen in the image and there’s now 1/4 inch...

Tile on tile Discussion Thread

Tile on tile

Hi. Hoping you al. Can help me.

I have an issue where I had a bathroom built and a shower installed. The shower is tiled floor to ceiling on three walls with a shower screen on the 4th side.

I had issues with the tiles that the fitter installed ( he has since disappeared so I can’t go to him to resolve ) and I thought I’d try to do the bits myself.

Anyway The grouting in the tiles is weak and in places has gone leaving gaps between the tiles. I have dug out as much...

Tiling hallway through to bathroom but needs to be done in two parts

Hi,

I am planning on getting my hallway tiled and continuing the tiles into the small bathroom off to the left of the hallway (with no door bar or anything so the tiles will just continue into bathroom). I will be getting a tiler to do the work but just wanting to get an idea of how this would best be done as I need to have the bathroom done first and then the hallway later as a result of some other works I’ve got...
