Hi guys new to the forum, as the title suggests I've been on the NVQ for almost 1 year, and experiencing some difficulty gathering evidence.

I'm looking for some advice from those who have been through the NVQ process, I may be overthinking it all to some extent. To start with, my background is in domestic, but started working for a firm that does a mix of commercial & domestic as I was under the impression the NVQ would require some evidence of commercial work. But looking at the criteria required, it seems I may have misunderstood this(?). The reason I mention this, if I had continued working in domestic I would undoubtedly have gathered a lot more evidence by now.. For reasons I'll explain below.

This isn't a dig at the firm I work for, I've no complaints about them. But the way it tends to work is I'll be working on site for couple of days, then working alone on callouts/testing for a few days, and back to site etc.

So first off, working in London often means working in crowded spaces on site, setting up a tripod is often inappropriate for the enviroment, and asking someone to take 5 mins out to take photo's of me doing "x" feels like I'm seriously inconveniencing them.

When working alone it's often awkward to either take a selfie or set up a tripod, thats without explaining to the client that its to collect evidence for a qualification.. Because, you know... I'm not 'technically' fully qualified!!

So essentially what I have so far, is some evidence of terminating different cables on different jobs, a bit of safe isolation on another job.. Starting to fabricate steel trunking on another job, but nothing to show it being installed etc etc. I just have odd bits of evidence, and none of it is from start to finish on one job if that makes sense.

Had I have continued working in domestic, for a guy I became good friends with.. He would have been a lot more understanding, and I'd be working in enviroments where its a bit easier to take the required photo's.

Am I overthinking whats required for the portfolio? Has anyone completed the NVQ with soley domestic evidence?

I'm at the point of considering to jack it in, or litterally offering my services to a firm for free for 3 weeks or so, with the understanding that I can collect the evidence required.

I don't necessarily 'need' the NVQ right away, it just seemed like the obvious thing to do in order to progress, but as it stands its difficult to see it ever being completed.

Oh yeah, in addition to this. My assessor has said I need to complete a remote H&S observation before the deadline next month. I've mentioned this to the boss, and I don't think he can accomodate it.

So, it's just another obstacle.

I know many people will say my boss should be making allowances etc. But I'm not an apprentice, to all intents and purposes I work for him as a competent electrician and I'm paid the going rate for it. In his eyes, making arrangements to be on a suitable site to complete a H&S observation doesn't contribute to the business with tight work schedules etc, and I don't think that's unreasonable.

None of this is a dig my boss or training provider. I'm genuinely trying to figure out how anyone gets this done! I get the feeling I may need to take a different approach to it all.
