    Replacing consumer unit

Hagar always seems to be mentioned as the best choice. I am perfectly happy using Fusebox or BG. As for cost. Could be £600 without any problems and cheap board. Likely to be around £800. Could easily be £1000. Might be many thousands if the electrician discovers many faults. I think I've...

What is your hourly rate as a self employed electrician? (2024-25)

So far (population of 42), 25% of self employed electricians charge ≥ £60 p/hour. 65% charge somewhere between £30 and £59. Bit too tired to work out the mean average, but it's somewhere around £42 p/hour

    Public Liability insurance and indemnity?

It seems like the right thing to do if I am carrying out EICR's. I'd much rather not have it, but then you're taking a pretty big gamble.

    Public Liability insurance and indemnity?

I have just had my renewal quote through. It's up to £290. This includes employees liability and £5000 for tools. It doesn't include indemnity. I thought this was high, but when I've gone on line to compare, it comes out in the £400 + range. I just wondered if there were any recommendations...

What brand power tools (battery) you are happy with ?

Makita not even mentioned once! I've got all makita and it has never let me down. The only down side is that most other trades have it too, so you have to mark all of yours in some way. I have just bought the Milwaukee fuel impact driver and drill. Both are ridiculously powerful and just feel...

Heads up on a silly priced screwfix offer!

I actually prefer them to the appleby. Anything more than a standard 12mm plasterboard and the fixed appleby sizing's become a problem. They are nowhere as sturdy as appleby's though.

Heads up on a silly priced screwfix offer!

Screwfix are offering a 10 pack of dry lining boxes for free if you buy certain lap products. So, if you buy just one cheap Lap product (i.e Lap blank plate for 50p, you get 10 x dry ling boxes worth £3.50). I've just got 300 boxes and 30 blank plates for £15. Should last me a good few years...

    My recent Napit assessment.

With regards test sheets, this is a difficult one to say with certainty as each assessor is different and they sometimes ask for different things. This year my assessor just wanted to see the EIC for the job I was showing him (rewire). He did ask how many notifiable jobs I had done since I was...

Is there a table of expected R1+R2 results in BS7671?

10 years ago Steve! That's a little bit scary.

    My recent Napit assessment.

Just a bit of reassurance for those of you who are about to be assessed for the first time, and some advice for those who are already registered. The initial assessment takes around 3 - 4 hours. Subsequent assessments around 1.5 hours. They are definitely not out to fail you, they want your...

    Life after Napit/NICEIC?

That will be interesting David.. Try to remember to update this thread in a year or so :) On occasion, my builder has been asked to ask me to send through my Napit registration number so the building authority can check that i am registered. This is the main thing that is bothering me about...

    Life after Napit/NICEIC?

I'm a good few years from retirement (aged 52), but I am slowly winding down my hours. One of the things I dislike is the yearly assessment. It always goes absolutely fine, and I know it always will, however It's a stressful couple of hours, plus a stressful few hours/days leading up to it. Not...

    TT or PME

I'm guessing the quotation marks for 'main earth' are because you know you can't assume it is the main earth without seeing what it is attached to. I can't see a reason to disconnect it once the rod is in place, but may stand corrected.
