Hello

This is my first post on the forum.

I have been qualified about a year and working for a building services company. Recently I was made redundant and applied for a couple of jobs through recruiters online. I went for multiskilled m&e roles in retail and managed to get an offer for one. After going through all the usual processes, I asked the manager what the most common faults were, he said blocked toilets and said I would need to rod the toilets and urinals when required.

I might be new to the industry but should I be taking a job like this? Is it normal to be fixing doors and locks and toilet issues as well as repairs to lighting?

Thanks

sod that, mate. what are plumbers for? you need to be applying for electrical maintenance jobs, not wet-pants who can change a light bulb.

Did you spend precious time and money getting qualified in your chosen area to go turd fishing ? Therein lies your answer.

that's hit the nail on the head....... or is it turd on the tail?

Depends on the balance I suppose. I sometimes help out with more general handyman stuff in my current job, although I'm employed as an electrician and the vast majority of what I do is electrical.

Yes, That's what a Multiskilled M& E job can be.

If it's not for you, don't take the job.

The salary is 27K plus call outs and o/t.
The bit that really got me was when he said that London stores have cultural issues with people crapping in plastic cups and ramming them i the u bend!
They didn't cover this on my 2395 course! I don't mind occasional problems but they would only call a drain company if the place was "swimming in brown water" meaning that I am the first point of contact and have to have a go.

Is this normal for a building services company?

Every job has the occasional shyte task, its the nature of work. I work on a new Energy from Waste plant, and in the last year we've had numerous toilet blockages. ..they're always in the women's ;) The bloke who unblocks them doesn't mind...gets paid the same unblocking a toilet or maintaining the turbine
