Hello

This is my first post on the forum.

I have been qualified about a year and working for a building services company. Recently I was made redundant and applied for a couple of jobs through recruiters online. I went for multiskilled m&e roles in retail and managed to get an offer for one. After going through all the usual processes, I asked the manager what the most common faults were, he said blocked toilets and said I would need to rod the toilets and urinals when required.

I might be new to the industry but should I be taking a job like this? Is it normal to be fixing doors and locks and toilet issues as well as repairs to lighting?

Thanks

Does anyone know what an electrician would be expected to do day to day in a big retail outlet? I was told that all the emergency lights and fixed wire testing was subbed out leaving me with the question, what's left for me to do that is going to keep a spark interested. I've also jist been offered another position in a building services company in london but that one would be more plant room orientated but I've never had any training in one. No toilets though but alot more pressure to get things working. Any advice please as I'm pulling my hair out as have no experience of either job.

Retail outlets need multi skilled, there isn't enough to justify single skilled.

If you only want to do Electrical, then Retail is not for you.

Can you read drawings and work logically? I’ve swapped industries twice, it’s daunting but you said you wanted something to keep you interested. One thing I’ve found helps a great deal, in any slack time get to know the plant by nosing around your patch.
