My closest neighbour is a marine engineer and spends normally ten weeks on board getting to wherever they are going, but as he says being on the water in the Atlantic you make do with what you have to hand.

Matey reckons it was like that for 40+ years his mate who was a marine engineer did it for him

Working on well rotted , Landy wiring ,a good layer of solder makes for a low rot joint . (But hopeless for screw terminals as solder creeps under compression.
(so would not surprise me it that was a marine way)

And he put in built in strain relief, by way of a knot in the cable. ?
I have seen that a few times on PA amps for musicians several decades ago, and the (unclamped) cable twisted round multiple times till the CPC breaks off. There were (mostly) pre-RCD times and I really wonder that so few musicians dies on stage if what I was was a representative sample :(

Wow! Special! Personally I'd start with the size of the link wire between the main earth and the cpc's (that took me a moment to find) as that is quite seriously iffy. No, cancel that, just seen RCD wiring!
Everything out!

So it’s a new DB mounted on top of an old 3036 board carcass, with the original earthing terminal still in situ. It was actually hidden behind the back of the plastic DB, I took at it with a pair of pliers to expose it!

The RCD is just there for decoration now, it’s been bypassed. If you look closely you’ll see a brown tail going into the bottom of the last circuit on the left to provide power.
Out of interest I wired it correctly to see if the RCD would trip out and it didn’t, and I didn’t pick up anything on the EICR either!

I reckon that was a DIY job, you just couldn't make such an awful mess of meter tails if you tried, that and a dozen other things.
Not so sure about the DIY. With some of the crap these days it wouldn't surprise me if they were with one of the scams.
Got the wibbly wobblies with them tails.......in the unit, they look like Olive Oil's legs on Popeye.
