The wires have been damaged to the point where it is not safe to connect anything to them.
if you are lucky, there may be some slack in the ceiling void that you could pull through some undamaged cable.
remember to turn the power off first.

Ugh, was there a 500W incandescent fitting there? definitely heat damage.

Yes one wire nut will grab a wire but I will suggest an orange one because the wire is 14 gage wire for lighting.
