Whatever you do don't plug that in until the plug has been replaced properly with a new one ! It's potentially lethal and I'm amazed you even had to ask !

It's missing most of its top.

The danger is from live electricity, when plugged in and energised, specifically from live terminals around the fuse.

If you touch the exposed fuse with the plug powered up you'll at best get a nasty shock, at worst scenario, death.

fyi i found this in a rental and wasnt sure if they had been using it or not. i just moved in.
you will be horrified to know that before posting the pic i plugged it in and then plugged it out (after turning off the swtich)

if i want to replace it is that an easy job to get a new top or is it more the case that i need a whole new plug and cable

It's highly doubtful that you will be able to purchase just a replacement cover for it. The whole thing would need replaced.

Are you serious, is this for real? I'm sure you have other 13A plugs that are complete so it must be pretty obvious what is missing, leaving live terminals exposed!

It's just a simple case of fitting a new plug to the existing flex.

It won't matter as the replacement plug will come with all the required parts.

My first post was rather harsh as I assumed this was a troll post... And by I needs to be replaced should have been it needs to be replaced! (I hope I don't need replacing yet!)

That was part of how I ended up guessing a sandwich toaster, I think the plug was left on it while cooling down, hence the nice symmetrical shape.

I've had one break in a similar manner.

Centre of V is retaining screw and gripping sides of plug to pull out means it breaks upwards from that centre point. There was another recent thread showing something similar, so I'd put it down to the usual combination of poor design and manufacture, combined with inferior choice of material.

This has to be a wind up!
You wouldn't even get that plug into a socket without physically pushing on the bare metal at the back of both the live and neutral pins.

The socket was switched off, it would really hurt if the socket was on...

I have seen broken plug tops is service with damaged backs and even with NO back

but never one like that with a perfect V carved out the back

But as mentioned above it could be melted by leaving on top of the toaster maker

you are not far off, it's a small george foreman grill, which I guess is very similar to a toasted sandwich maker?!
