A customer has rang me to go round and price up a new consumer unit, the property is a two bedroom house and he said they currently have an old basic 6way fuse board, only one circuit for all sockets, one for all lights etc.
He had an electrician out who said he wouldnt do it as it wouldnt be safe unless he had a full house rewire? He has no interest in having the house rewired tho just wants the CU replaced.

Is it some reason why he would be told this or is the electrician just trying to make the most of an old chap?

I refused to do a CU change on an old victorian terrace recently.

Old rubbers falling to bits where ever it came out of the wall

2 upstairs lights on next doors old rubber cables..................

Forget it....someone else can have the hastle!!!

Danger notice issued and rewire reccomended................ [ElectriciansForums.net] Consumer Unit change with only 6 fuses

Im going there on tuesday to take a look, as soon as he mentioned another electrician had been there i asked him if he had done any tests as a reason why he needed a rewire, he said no he was there for five minutes, had a look at the where the fuse board was an instantly said he needed a full rewire, which shocked him abit. But he had been seriously ripped off before when he had his windows replaced so said no to him.

It is your decision not " some other electrician's". If you had gone to the site cold you would test the CCTs and inspect the wiring. Then make an informed decision. You then advise the customer accordingly and explain your reasons. It is easy to get bogged down with what some one else has said or done but it's your reputation you have to guard.

is the original CU a rewireable fuse one?
All due respect mate but that question is irrelevant. There are loads of that type of CU up and down the country that are good for continued service. Granted a more modern one may offer a greater degree of protection but like I say if it is functional then there is no onus on anyone to rip it out

I would hazard a guess your electrician may be able to contact your DNO and have the switch swapped to a MFS very quickly..
