A job coming up in a couple of weeks which started out as "I need a rewire". Went round to check it all out for a quote, IR fine all round, cable condition very good, everything terminated nicely at the accessories, all run in split oval. The main work to the house is a kitchen and bathroom refit along with some other stuff. Youngish couple just bought it. I asked why they thought a rewire was needed, no surprises with the answer "that's what the other electrician said". I aksed if he'd said why he thought that? "because it's old" came the reply. He hadn't even opened up the board, let alone have any fronts off or get a meter on anything.

I priced the job as a CU upgrade with the usual faffing with the kitchen wiring, which incidentally is as tidy an installation as you're likely to find. Neon switched fuse units above the worktops, unswitched sockets below etc.

It will genuinely be a shame to take this off the wall and replace it with a plastic fantastic.

I did consider that, but chatting with the customer they're nice people but would probably feel ripped off if there wasn't some ugly chunk of plastic in its place. They looked askance when I told them that there was no rewire required for some years to come. So I had to explain the whys and wherefores, and I think keeping the box and replacing the guts would have been a step too far. Even if it did mean they'd have a better end result.

Needless to say it's not going into the scrap.

Oh, don't forget to upgrade the main earth wire lol, green was replaced by green and yellow a fair while back haha, Joking aside it is a nice Job there and the guy who put it in was a decent spark in his day.

then why even go for a new C/U?
replace the BS3036s with 60898s...and fit a stand alone RCD....

an upfront RCD can be a pain for nuiecnce tripping and when it does trip will leave the property in a potential dangerous situation, IE just pooring the kettle. there is a reg against this situation, but cant look it up as im not going out to the van now. :)

i mean is supplementary bonding installed?...

Most regs are written by guys in suits in london who are bored and feel they need to justify their salaries TBH, some new regs are very impressive, however some are just pants, if the installation is in resonable nick, why not just replace the rewireables with push in MCBs?

Tottally agree,,, but us poor bottom feeders will have to eat time, when we get ripped a new one when we go against the BGB and someone gets hurt( even if its noth our fault). it is nice to see a quality consumer unit install, like the above, only to rip it apart and squease a pile of crap in its place... Oh to have the power to make a diffrence, thats been there for 20+ years why should the BGB have the upper hand :)

It's honestly not an option, they have just enough knowledge to be afraid of being ripped off, and scared of it being old and unsafe.

I did good work by saving them from a rewire, if I'd pushed it further ironically I would probably have come out looking the dodgy one.
