A job coming up in a couple of weeks which started out as "I need a rewire". Went round to check it all out for a quote, IR fine all round, cable condition very good, everything terminated nicely at the accessories, all run in split oval. The main work to the house is a kitchen and bathroom refit along with some other stuff. Youngish couple just bought it. I asked why they thought a rewire was needed, no surprises with the answer "that's what the other electrician said". I aksed if he'd said why he thought that? "because it's old" came the reply. He hadn't even opened up the board, let alone have any fronts off or get a meter on anything.

I priced the job as a CU upgrade with the usual faffing with the kitchen wiring, which incidentally is as tidy an installation as you're likely to find. Neon switched fuse units above the worktops, unswitched sockets below etc.

It will genuinely be a shame to take this off the wall and replace it with a plastic fantastic.

[ElectriciansForums.net] A shame to take it out.

I'm thinking about doing just that Timbo.

The work that's actually needed is an upgrade for earthing and bonding, and RCD protection for the kitchen and bathroom. I've recommended RCD protection for the other circuits and explained why.

The installation passes visual examination, all the cabling is run correctly as far as I can see (without removing plaster), there's no signs of overloading on any circuits, and everything tests OK. Roy Rogers didn't remove any fronts, take the cover off of the CU, or get a meter to it anywhere. So the rewire was just BS to generate work.

Ajay, I'll stack shelves in Tesco for a living before I start lying to people and conning them into having work done which isn't needed or required under the 17th.

of course it was BS....lol......how can anyone make an accurate prognosis/diagnosis of the situation without preliminary inspections...and those vital pre-work tests....
complete rubbish...lol.....
probably someone from the local club or summat....who `knew about leccy`....lol...

As neat as it looks, it doesn't comply with the current edition of the regs; the fact that it was installed 'properly' and hasn't been added to is no reason to keep it for posterity.
Of course the ultimate decision is down to the client - you can point out that while it doesn't comply with current regs it still complies with the edition when it was installed and is still perfectly 'legal'.

If you/the client do decide to change the board, you might have fun getting those conduits to line up again...

Get the right enclosure and a core cutter will sort that out. I'm going to have a measure up at the wholesalers so that I can keep the conduit drops as they are if at all possible.

If the DB with RCBO's upgrade is done i see there is 4 x 5amp fuses but only 3 single neutrals (but i am sure you noticed that to)

I hate singles in anything other then pvc, steel conduit or trunking (regardless of the 2 coat sleeving)

The original works where obviously was done by a proud tradesman (shame there aint that many out there :()

The main earth looks too small, also I'd at least change the tails to double insulated. If you decide to replace the DB. If they're plastic conduits, put a piece of 50x50 plastic trunking between the conduits and a new DB and slot the trunking where it meets the DB, if they're metal conduits, use metal trunking and bond it, also put a piece of paxilin or the like, between the board and the metal trunking don't forget the endcaps.
