I

iamelectric

can someone answer the question to the rewire thread without an argument breaking out , as this was also my understanding and if its not right i will have to ring the council in the morning as they rewired my house a year ago with no mechanical protection and cables plastered into the walls , i dont want everyone saying this is bad practice or i wouldnt do a job like that just want to know if it complies with the regs and if not what ones , cheers

cables are fine plastered direct in the walls. capping or tube is beneficial in as much as damaged cables cables can be replaced without re-chasing. there is nothing in regulations against burying cables directly in plaster.

When I rewire, some get burried in plaster and some don't, it depends on what I find and the surface etc, it adds no protection having it. I put it in more than not, but there's nothing wrong with not putting it in. Even with it, it's not always possible to pull new cables through anyway. All to there own, but so long as it works and complies and is safe etc, there's nothing wrong.

rcd-rccb as main switch , i know about reg 314.1(i) - (v) but to me this is not stating that a rcd or rccb cant be used as main switch if im missing something please point it out
CB - gives overload and short circuit protection so cant see why except one circuit tripping trips everything is that the case

Okay if this thread goes downhill as well I'm going to change the avatars of all those concerned to the Hof and I'll lock the user settings so they can't be removed.

You've been warned!!!

to quote:

314.1 (i) avoid danger and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault.

Which I interpret as meaning no one single fault should turn off all the power, and hence why I wouldn't change an existing install so that a single RCD is added up front.

rite...

if its a sub board (garage for instance) ...then an RCD main switch would be entirely appropriate...

but for say DB1...then no....
either split load or hi-integrity (RCBOs)...
as for cables...then earthed mechanical protection can be given (such as a galv conduit) buried in the wall...but you would still have the issue of accessories/outlets to be used by unskilled/uninstructed person/s not under supervision.....
wouldn`t you....

I dont quite think he had grasped the fundamentals of basic protection, mechanical protection and additional protection. Or if he had he wasnt exposing his knowledge in the thread .....

Hence why I don't always put capping over as its not a form of "additional protection" as people don't tend to like 3mm steel capping rounded their front room!
