I

iamelectric

can someone answer the question to the rewire thread without an argument breaking out , as this was also my understanding and if its not right i will have to ring the council in the morning as they rewired my house a year ago with no mechanical protection and cables plastered into the walls , i dont want everyone saying this is bad practice or i wouldnt do a job like that just want to know if it complies with the regs and if not what ones , cheers

yep...

to encourage some in here without the basic knowledge to just think they are complying by using what would be an upfront RCD is irresponsible to say the least....

I think you need to acquaint yourself with UK BS 7671 regs update 2011 before misleading "rough" sparks.

If I wrote the regs I would include a reg saying that a single upfront RCD is not allowed. Simples.

I made it clear it was poor design but there's nothing unsafe about it.

314.1 (i) avoid danger and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault.

I could throw the same reg back and say if that applies to an upfront RCD then even dual RCD's should be outlawed and replaced with RCBO's on every circuit.

Ouch, that reply was domestic violence without a punch thrown

split load duel RCD boards were a kind of `half way house` anyway....a progression from the 16th ed setup...

this was because RCBOs were so expensive at the time....

I'm happy with my set up . a nice big board with a main switch and 14 RCBOs and room to spare for a few more.

( Just got the meter bypass to sort out .........Do any of you lads have a nice big change over relay thingy and a timer going spare?? )

On a TT system supply i would have no hesitation at all in replacing a DP main switch for a 100/300mA S type RCD, especially if the Ra value is anything close to BS7671 numbty recommendations!!

On a further note, Most MDB MCCB's on larger installation projects will incorporate an earth fault trip as part of that breakers protection facilities. Which makes any statement that an up front RCD device should not be not be allowed, complete folly!!

At the end of the day, the protection provided to any installation should be designed/chosen to best suit the installation needs.... There has never been a one solution fits all in this industry!!
