Earthing/bonding of independent system inside existing building

It'll only be extraneous if it's connected to true earth such as via an underground metal conduit etc. If the building is steel framed, the lighting frames may well end up being bonded by being bolted to the steel framework. Another way to think of it is that if you dump a fridge in the middle...

    Wireless 2 Way Switches

Look up Quinetic wireless switches. Should do exactly what you require.

Mix of old and new colours for singles for same circuit

In the old days (pre 2004) it was common to find single phase circuits wired in SWA with red as line, yellow as cpc and blue as neutral. The fact its singles in conduit makes no real difference. As has been said, sleeve the red as brown or the blue to black and all is good.

RCD tripping, could a surge protected extension lead be responsible?

After several visits I did IR test it (as I'd forgotten to unplug it!) and the test showed low resistance to cpc. Up until that point it had been a nuisance trip every few weeks.

RCD tripping, could a surge protected extension lead be responsible?

Yes, I had a neighbour who had intermittent RCD tripping. It was a surge protected extension lead that was causing it.

RCBO energised despite N-E short... until the power was cycled...

I guess it's possible that the Rcbo had temporarily failed so it didn't trip originally. Perhaps cycling the power has made it work again - a bit like when they sometimes don't trip when testing first time round after not having been tested for years, but loosen up after they've been operated...

    Lights going dim when switched

It sounds like the cable that you think is neutral is actually a switch wire for the lounge light.

    Re-wire on the side.

I'm not sure about the Scottish rules, but I'd be wary doing it without insurance. Imagine hitting a pipe and flooding the flat downstairs...

UK Spur off a 4mm twin and earth, 32amp radial

UK Spur off a 4mm twin and earth, 32amp radial

A 45A double pole switch would be suitable if you want a means of isolating the external part of the circuit.

    In the confessional....

Screwing on the lid of a Memshield DB, hanging the door and then spotting the neutral/cpc terminal covers on the floor.

    Scammed by the scams!

It was worse than that... They'd been cut in half, so you got half a roll (half a top, half the filling and half the bottom). To be fair, the NIC guys apologised about them at the start of their presentation.

    Sub main & bonding conductors

Best to write to the designer to highlight your concerns and ask for comments. Also state that they will be designated as the "designer" on the EIC when you issue it.

    confused with ballast

Question 1: live and neutral can be either way round. Question 2: as you say, likely to be one colour pair to 1&2. The other colour pair to 3&4.

    UK Kettle Element Keeps Blowing

That's a good question. Does the tenant try the kettle again after the mcb has been reset? It could be too many appliances switched on and the kettle is the final appliance used that causes the mcb to operate.

No lights in two upstairs room

    Sounds like a lost neutral.

What's led up to the lights not working? Any work done elsewhere?

Can radio linked smoke alarms be on different circuits, including a ring?

Agree with you that it's a fixed load, but Appendix 15 shows only BS1363 accessories connected directly to the ring final. There is an example in A15 of a fixed piece of equipment being supplied via an fcu. As with many things the BBB is not that clear on this one! :)

Can radio linked smoke alarms be on different circuits, including a ring?

I haven't time this morning to check the BBB, but I always thought that anything connected to a ring final had to be fused down in one way or another.

Can radio linked smoke alarms be on different circuits, including a ring?

Could you cut a drylining box next to it and install a fcu from the ring final?
