Thankfully there is enough slack, so I should be able to use a crimp or the inline connector Buzz has mentioned above. It hadn't occurred to me that there might not be continuity so I'll have to test that on them all.
I have a small utility room which has a double 13amp socket from which a washing machine is powered. I'd like to install a show cubicle in the same room but this would mean the 13amp socket would be about 2 metres from the shower which is I believe, non-compliant. Is there any compliant way of...
I need to replace some plastic light switches and would like to use metal replacements. The old switches had no provision for an earth wire and most of them had a sleeved unconnected earth wire which I was able to utilise. However, in three of the back-boxes the earth wire was cut short, is it...
By trunking I think he meant a plastic u-shaped channel with a snap-on lid. I assume a 13 amp plug would be in use and the "trunking" added to provide some extra protection to the 1.25 flex.
I was chatting with a PAT tester who mentioned that he would fail 4-way extensions where the flex had been trunked and the client was using them with appliances drawing 13 amps. His reasoning was that the trunked flex should be de-rated. Would you agree with this?
I do use the radio and I don't think of it as dangerous, I just wanted to ensure I was using it in the safest way possible. As it happens it's fitted with a 3 amp fuse so I'll take your advice regarding a 2 amp fuse. Thanks.
Mostly the reasons I stated initially. If I compare its construction to a modern class 2 appliance it falls short in a number of areas and could not be retailed legally if it were a new item. I have to assume that all the regulations governing a new item are there for good reasons. Some forum...
Fear not, there's lots I don't know but I do know how an RCD works. I would be interested in any advice offered on mains isolation transformers though e.g. how best to use one with my iffy valve radio. I should add I think I understand how an isolating transformer makes the appliance safer, it's...
It's a Cameo, don't know the model, originally purchased in 1946-7. I think a lot of the caps were replaced. It's also been converted such that it will no longer work on 240v DC, a wire-wound resistor was removed and a washing-machine cap added. It runs a bit cooler than in its original...
Apologies if I'm posting this question in the wrong forum. I have an old valve radio that has been rewired internally so is basically sound. The problem is it has no provision for a protective earth, the internal chassis is wired to neutral (was live before rewiring!) and it is far from double...
Thanks all for your comments. So it sounds like it's normal behaviour for a RCD to trip if earth and neutral connect on a dead cable, I was worried it might indicate some kind of fault. For the record I think my wiring is TNS (earth is taken from the supply sheath).
Recently had an electric cooker removed, the wire was left hanging out of the connection unit having been disconnected at the cooker end (all switched off at the consumer unit). I think the bare earth was touching one of the other two wires. My question is why did the RCD trip when I turned the...
Hi all, I'm new to both this forum and PAT testing. I've been given a Megger PAT2 to use but it's missing its flash testing probe, so I can't use the tester for Class 2 insulation tests. I'm not hopeful of getting a spare from Megger themselves so can anyone advise on a replacement? I'm afraid I...
