I've taken a brief look so far through this website and it's incredible! You guys clearly have a great passion for electrical systems and components, with a dedication to educating other people and accurately explaining the history and importance of the peices shown.
I'm genuinely taken back...
Welcome to the forum rabbit!
Congratulations on the apprenticeship course and successfully changing career, it's not easy! I also changed career to become an electrician so I know first-hand how hard it can be.
Regarding the portfolio, I personally chose to study the City & Guilds 2365 course...
I'd like to be upfront and honest, I believe I have made a mistake (a very silly mistake) with regards to my previous comments about dimmer switches which use auto-transformers. While this is embarrassing, I'd like to share my thoughts so others may learn from my mistakes.
What I Thought

I completely agree Pete999. In fact, my college did an experiment with the 17th Course; they entered one of their reception staff who had absolutely no electrical knowledge at all, but gave them only a couple of hours tuition in how to use BS7671... they passed the exam.
It's true that this could well be the case. Newer dimmer switches use phase-angle control, however there are many older dimmers installed use auto-transformers so it's best to check.
Just remember, these contactless indicators should be used to confirm when something is live, not to confirm when something is dead - there's a big difference. Regarding safe-isolation, you should use an approved voltage indicator complying with GS38 and the correct procedure.
I do however own...
In my opinion, let the qualified electrician deal with everything for the following reasons:
- Cable calculations & permissible voltage drop - it must be calculated to identify the correctly-sized conductor.
- Discrimination - There should be adequate discrimination between the protective...
Check the type of dimmer and type of lamp. Trailing-edge dimmers are best for capacitive loads (such as LED lamps), providing the actual lamps are capable of being dimmed, in which case check with the manufacturer.
Welcome to the forum Glendale!
I'm an electrician in Sussex, England myself with various experience on domestic (predominantly), commercial, and light-industrial jobs in my local area. I'm glad to meet someone like yourself who's involved in security systems as I'm considering installing CCTV...
Welcome to the forum Percy!
The regulations change all the time, there's nothing wrong with keeping up to date as previously mentioned. Remember that competency is based on the combination of academics and experience with many companies ideally looking for "experienced electricians" rather than...
A lot of great answers here. It might be a good idea to speak to the DNO and explain the situation. While the true answer seems obvious, it's still worth talking to the DNO even if it's just to update their records.
I agree, LED replacements are fantastic with instant 'switch-times' and great efficiency, also not effected by cold weather which can cause traditional fluorescents a delay when switched on.
I'll give answers in the long and short, quite literally:
Short:
- The starter may not be working...
Welcome to the forum Drew34!
I hope you're feeling better after the 2 year illness, congratulations on jumping back into things, the course can be difficult but very rewarding, ask as many questions as you need to!
If you take a look on Triton's website, they offer a cheaper price (£23.77) for this part, diagrams on the webpage, and technical support over the phone / via email:

I was paraphrasing, and I accept I wasn't completely correct during #13 but neither was I quoting. I hope this clears things up.
The regulations could be more specific regarding your question and at the end of the day, it's entirely your choice when interpenetrating it's contents. To be honest...
Page 4 of the current regulations (BS7671 Amendent 3) states under the title "Introduction to BS 7671:2008(2015)" during paragraph two, that "Existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the Regulations may not comply with this edition in every respect...
I completely agree. While some parts of the regulations are overly-complicated, other parts are far to vague.
Examples:
- Buried SWA is a great example of vagueness
- Performing calculations in reference to several tables of information to size a piece of conduit/trunking based on the number of...
