Do you mean the connectors on the panels? If they're not MC4s then they're probably MC3s. You could always chop the plug off the cable and remake it off into a different connector although this would possibly invalidate the warranty.
As far I can see, the meter is owned and maintained by others. The DNO is informed and the supplier is informed. If their meter goes backwards, that's up to them.
It may well be, of course, that the owner never sees the meter going backwards as their consumption is higher than produced energy...
