The Govt are monitoring usage for data. They have to be measure usage for three years. Only criteria to be eligible for free socket
Thanks Jason so who pays for the data connection and issues the sim card?

ÂŁ10 million for home charging points and it's almost all allocated for this financial year.

@SRE what does that actually mean - that no more can be done, or that you'll have to find a supplier with some of the allocation?

Once the ÂŁ10 million has been allocate there's nothing until April 2015 but then we're into election period so probably nothing until June/July. That's for all manufacturers and one is claiming to have sold 10,000 units. If you do the maths - ÂŁ1,000 x 10,000 units = ÂŁ10 million.

Might they also want meters so that electricity used to power a car can be taxed separately if/when fuel duty on petrol and diesel starts to decline?

Or am I just cynical?

It's bound to happen but not for a few years yet. I manage to charge my Leaf from our solar on a decent day like today. Takes about 0.5kw/hr from the grid which I can live with, about 45p for 85 - 90 miles.

The picture is much bigger than that though, as there is also long-term discussion about using EV's as effective buffer stores for renewable generation (e.g wind / solar) and controlled centrally in the way the Germans do with solar PV output.

Common sense it's already being done in Japan and Barbados is ready to introduce it. We have customers already waiting for it. EV is a magical world of opportunity - but at some point it's going to be hit with tax, it's inevitable.
