Without having my books to hand, having not (yet) been taught this and calling on the years of valuable experience available here, how does one select the CSA of the fly-lead?
Should it follow the usual rules for sizing CPCs - either be the same CSA as the live conductors or be selected by...
Thank you, I can see that makes sense. Re-reading regulation 411.5.3 I see it requires that the 0.2 s disconnection time (or 1 s for a distribution circuit) is met AND the resistance is low enough to achieve RCD operation at 50 V.
Although the required disconnection time for BS EN type RCDs at...
Hello,
I am assisting my supervisor and getting some first hand experience of completing certification by filling in an electronic copy of an EIC, working from a handwritten circuit schedule with test results and my memories of the installation work.
I am at home so cannot ask him for advice...
I noticed this issue has happened a couple of times. I use an RSS feed and that is also affected. It is back to normal now, but it would be interesting to know why this is happening from time to time.
Welcome the insight of the experienced contributors but my thought might be the possibility of a build up of dirt/corrosion on the switch contacts causing some arcing? I understand things also vibrate at resonant frequency but it would have to be something which vibrates intermittently at 50 Hz!
You will need to perform all the tests required to complete the fields on the EIC. Methods for performing these tests are described on your On-Site Guide.
If you have installed new circuits in a domestic property this is notifiable work under the Part P of the Building Regulations and you are...
Off topic, but for the purposes of my education, are these aluminium conductors?
I was aware tinned copper has been used in cables but didn't realise aluminium was ever used in small CSA/domestic cables.
This may be something to do with other telecommunications standards (BS 6701, BS EN 50174-1, BS EN50174-2).
I haven't seen these standards myself, but have seen them mentioned in various places.
Research has only led me to find documents such as the one linked below which are specifications for...
It is worth looking at starting with the L2 if you can (I did the EAL version at college), I think it offers a good foundation of knowledge in both terms of the theory and practical skills to allow you to be of use and open opportunities with employers etc.
Unless you enrol on an apprenticeship...
This appears to be a reproduction of the tables from The On Site Guide, Appendix E.
At the start of this appendix it is stated that this is guidance, which takes into account the ease of drawing-in single-core PVC insulated cables but not the electrical effects of grouping.
As a Trainee I find this thread both very interesting and confusing. I think the more I read here and research things the more things become grey areas. I could no doubt delve into the BYB and be left not much the wiser as many things are open to some level of interpretation. This thread has...
I think you are right Pete. Our apprenticeship training includes learning about different types of wiring systems and cable, their advantages, limitations and applications but does not really include older types of cable which are no longer installed but which may still be found in use.
Our...
Thank you for the replies, though not so appreciative of being labelled "dumb" but there we go.
Good to hear your opinions on taking Zs measurements.
My knowledge of electronics and in particular dimmer technology is not very good so this was a learning experience for me. The Megger article was...
Working on a job today which included a very simple new lighting circuit.
The lighting circuit a very short run from a distribution board to a single switch position, which then supplies a single luminaire.
The customer wanted a dimmer switch to control the fitting.
To crack on and perform the...
I converted to SSDs about 3 years ago and have found them a fantastic improvement to the performance of the machines they were used in. In my opinion the improved experience is worth the extra cost. I have also performed this upgrade for some other people or to replace dead/dying mechanical hard...
As mentioned the initial verification and testing was second to none - loose busbar, loose connections and broken neutrals before it's even turned on, nice!
Sounds like a very unfortunate experience for the OP.
Pretty shocking that they did that to the floor without even asking.
Also shocking about the forgetfulness, accessories not working, lighting issues, all after apparently being tested!
Only thing I could slightly sympathise with might be...
