Today I experienced the worst electric shock my career

These are pretty useful testers, I carry one in my kit and it's saved me a fair few times! kewtech KT1700 https://isswww.co.uk/kewtech-kt1700-single-pole-voltage-tester?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzva1BhD3ARIsADQuPnVkDLyExSFEZmQrFmcpnDsEjsdbRqwCmaovPHZVjOUrZ1SV6BQm1PsaAp8OEALw_wcB Much more...

Today I experienced the worst electric shock my career

It sounds like you were very unfortunate to get a shock but lucky that the device tripped and saved you! And as @nicebutdim says, it's lucky the householder hasn't been a victim of its fault. Many years ago when I had just finished my apprenticeship I managed to get a huge belt off an...

    Wireless socket tester

I bought a very similar one a while ago online for a job and then found the fault before I had a chance to use it, must give it a try! I have the TIS870 and that does get some use, it is a good unit and works well 80% of the time. I think noisy circuits are the worst ones to pin down. Only...

    gate intercom / gate openers

I've been fitting CAME gear, it's good kit easy to install and set up, had no issues with it. They do a wide range of accessories to go with it too.

Would any regular like to apply to become a member of a new type of help we need.

Hi Dan, Sorry I'm bowing out graciously! Thanks for the opportunity though, I would love to be able to contribute more to the forum, alas work and home take up most of my time at the moment. Just gone Ltd too and the paperwork to sort everything out has been a mission! Cheers, Sy

    Amendment 3 2024, BS7671 2018.

thanks @Julie That is an incredibly detailed answer. I have forgotten a lot of electronics from my college days through lack of use unfortunately, but that makes sense!

    Amendment 3 2024, BS7671 2018.

Sorry @Julie. I have not looked in depth at how bi-directional RCD's overcome this issue, as the detection circuit would surely have to come from one or other side of the device. Do you have any knowledge of how this is achieved? Thanks Sy

    Amendment 3 2024, BS7671 2018.

Yeah your probably right there! :) Still another exam to go and sit and another new book or 3 at least! My loft is starting to bulge with the amount of former regs books, guidance notes and onsite guides I have amassed since 1995. :mask:

    Amendment 3 2024, BS7671 2018.

This is getting out of hand! In all my years I cannot remember any previous amendments being this close together!! Or is it just me getting old and time feeling like it's going faster?

    Am I mad

I remember going to a second fix job as an apprentice with an electrician, we turned up at the job that had been first fixed by others on the firm to find all the lighting wired in twin red and earth! There were some choice words uttered that day, and much relentless ribbing for months after...

How tolerant of customers are you?

I get that a bit from New customers, expect an instant quote and start it next week co's X Y Z is happening. Err no I'm 6-8 weeks booking so won't be with you on Monday! My regular customers know how it works and are usually happy to wait, ok so they do break things and have faults, these I...

Misuse of Quickwire plug and socket

I made some adaptor plugs up when Maplins closed down, I got a job lot of insulated 4mm banana sockets for a few quid and made up a full range from 110v up to 400v. They are well handy! Doesn't have speed up testing!!

    Recessed lighting

They were awful fittings, very little room between the missing cable restraint and terminal blocks. As @littlespark says and the terminals are missing the plastic cover that was clip on, and struggled to stay in place. I fitted hundreds of similar ones. Best way was flex out of the fitting and...

Supply Isolator required to be metal on TT

That they can but that is not accumulated leakage, that is a fault. Having double pole RCD's downstream of the main switch RCD limits that to a few circuits, now with double pole RCBO's this is much less of a problem.

Supply Isolator required to be metal on TT

I have installed this arrangement many times over the years and never had an issue with accumulated leakage on a domestic installation to that level. I have however come across this issue on dairy installations where the vacuum pumps have been upgraded and changed to vfd driven. The vfd's were...

Supply Isolator required to be metal on TT

It is indeed no, but I still go for one just in case the 30ma protection fails, at least there is still some protection as a last resort back up!

    Condensation in outside light.

I had some do that to me! Turned out to be a combination of naff stuffing gland seeping in water around the nut securing the gland to the fitting and a rubbish seal on the front. Manufacturer ended up replacing all of them. Cough Knightsbridge cough! I don't know if yours are the same but the...

What’s the best way to fix this small gap in the consumer unit?

All the Fusebox boards I have bought come with a grey plastic adjustment blank that would fill that gap. Did that one not come with one?
