    Lucien's vintage fairground electrics thread

It's funny really, there we were going along quite happily in life with horse/cart and a barge, and through the power of money mixed with a tiny fraction of steam, inventers went and made every body extremely unhealthy and following a path they laid for there own wealth. Not the inverters...

    Battery trip problem developed

Hi Lucien, does coming from the + and - from the battery and not using the chassis make any difference to keeping the batteries balanced with the cables + and - being the same length? Also running from the fusebox the same? Or does it make no difference.

    12v Rcd or equivalent

My mate in China just sent me a selection of these. I'm testing them out over the next few days. I'm pretty convinced things can be tidied up and a consumer unit made to house them neatly!

    12v Rcd or equivalent

Well the other day I was looking at a van where the back light had a bad connection to the bulb, and instead of melting the fuse it had started burning through the wire instead. The 3amp blade fuse showed no sign of any problem. My thoughts were that if something like an Rcd could monitor what...

    12v Rcd or equivalent

Why isn't there any? If you're using only the plus-negative on the battery and the only grounding point is battery negative to chassis, then surely a 12v rcd would be possible. Or am I missing something totally here. I've scoured the internet and found absolutely nothing!

Car battery charging, how high should voltage go?

Alternator will charge a battery when driving, normal sort of reading will be 14.4 when driving or tick over. A smart alternator will only charge when the battery needs it, but smart alternators only seem to be about in the last 3-4years A healthy 12v battery will be in the 12.4 - 12.8 range
