    Advice on Unsatisfactory EICR report

Grossly unreasonable comment, which I think others online have recognised. If you don't have anything useful to contribute, perhaps its better to contribute nothing. If you look at the EICR it says "safety assessment requested by client". I was clear that I'm looking to replace the CU and...

    Advice on Unsatisfactory EICR report

I've had an EICR on the house in Reading that I rent out with some unsatisfactory points and I'm looking for some advice. Broadly, there are no big surprises because I know that the CU is old, has no RCDs and needs to be changed out. But: 1) Circuits not buried more than 50mm....the house was...

Them wooden things in the ceilings

Optimistic - on my newbuild house the developer won't give me any plans at all. I'm having to work it out for myself. I use a FLIR thermal camera to work out where the pipes for the heating system are and the dabs of plaster that fix the plasterboard walls (they're colder than the rest of the...

    Anyone seen this symbol before?

LED lamps with line sources and clear covers are another new-ish development - I installed my lights about 3 years ago and used what was available at the time. Being LED, I haven't needed to replace them yet, but if I did it would be around 60 bulbs so quite expensive, even here.

    Anyone seen this symbol before?

Last time I bought a chandelier in the UK the "crystals" were plastic and didn't sparkle at all. Rapidly replaced with one hand-carried from Azerbaijan. It's a real struggle to put chandeliers in UK homes as the ceilings are too low, only about 2.5m so you are limited to short designs on short...

    Anyone seen this symbol before?

"false economy to use any other type of bulb in a chandelier that big IMO" Well you can say that now with the benefit of the alternatives available in 2019. But in Azerbaijan we've had 20-lamp chandeliers for over 15 years and when first installed the only lights available were 40W...

Could anyone give me some ideas on tools

I'm not an electrician but...I do a lot of DIY. I wouldn't buy anything from someone else's list. Over many years I have had a policy to buy the right tools for whatever job I'm doing. After a few jobs you will find that you are buying less and less because you already have it. If you see a...

So now I know how long is a piece of string... Thanks, sounds like I don't need this!

    Digital tape measure

I'm toying with a digital distance measure for my Christmas pressie for me...had one a few years ago but I never trusted it and always ended up checking with a steel tape. So...do you use a digital tape measure, and to what extent do you trust it? Over how long (or short) a distance do you...

Thermal imaging camera, any recommendations on the budget end?

I have a FLIR One, a couple of years old, I love it. They come in IOS/Android flavour based on the connector to your phone. Cost of latest 3rd generation is £180+VAT so right on your budget. For the price it's a super tool. There's a higher resolution FLIR One Pro one for twice that. But...

Voltmeter on 3P CU - connecting very small wires

Lucien - some useful tips here. The meter wires actually plug into the PCB so I may have the opportunity to upgrade them Using inline fuse holders avoids joining two sizes of cable directly, so that's a plus. I like that idea. Fuses seem OK, I can find HRC ceramic fast-blow 0.25A, but no...

Voltmeter on 3P CU - connecting very small wires

The meters are rated to 500V and were connected Ph-N. Right now they aren't connected. The wires don't have anything printed on them but the insulation feels quite thick compared to the wires. I'm not worried about the rating of the meter.

Voltmeter on 3P CU - connecting very small wires

I'm in Azerbaijan so UK regs don't apply but safety and common sense do. My house has a 3 phase supply to the main CU, which then feeds 6 other CUs around the house - one on each floor, one for aircon and one for garden. The incomer is 3P+N, no earth. I have two earth rods in the garden. We...

    Insulation resistance test issue

This is my house in Reading! In Azerbaijan many, even most, houses are wired without earth cables at all. I have a 3 phase supply with 4x16mm aluminium cores. I put two large earth rods in the garden. The house is wired with T&E and CU imported from the UK, apart from first fix I did most of...

    Insulation resistance test issue

I think this time round I'll be there when it's done. Sounds like I need to be! S'funny, 20-30 years ago when you hired an expert you just left them to get on with it, nowadays you need to have a much higher degree of understanding to even define the job that needs to be done. But that's...

    Insulation resistance test issue

Limitations were : - Unable to disconnect all connected loads to carry out L-N insulation resistance testing, - No lifting of floor boards or inspection of loft space Thinking about it, "Unable to disconnect" seems a strange thing to say. Of course it would have taken more time (which I'm sure...
