YES you can get 150W versions of the j type halogen lamps,
they also make a smaller / shorter one that is 150w.
but in the j size which i think is 111mm yes they are available
maybe not a common size,
So will be harder to find
but a supplier should be able to get them
This will only work on...
if the canister lights have a closed back design ?
Then the lamps will run much hotter,
At when compared to an open back design
So my guess is these new lights are a closed back design with little or no ventilation
so your lamps run much hotter and suffer from short life span.
Since it is already an old house,
Then the best move is to do a total rewire and upgrade your safety,
Like you say the best time is now before you move in,
For sure not cheap, but peace of mind is beyond value
And a small percentage of the replacemant cost of a fire.
Some things you can scrimp...
Many of the cheaper ones are flimsy and will not last very long on larger loads.
How ever you can get plug in heavy duty timers, they seem to last much longer
Is the second leg even in there ?
As I cannot see it
If you only have 120v ?
Then it's possible that only one leg is present
If so ? then 240 is not possible
As for 240 you need two differrant legs
More likely is that you have power at the transfomer but a bad connecttion somewhere.
low voltage high current only needs a small resistance to have a major impact on the output.
DITTO !
It may work, but it is most definitily NOT safe.
that clip will easily fall off,
And when it does, it could move around and touch anything,
Please don't use it !
I think perhaps your system is making available a lot of power, but the grid is not taking this power in ? This is because the local grid has enough power available to it most of the time, and does not need to be topped up. ( this is when they buy power from you ). But when they don't need power...
it looks like they were originally crimped into the terminals,
Sometimes if your carefull you can gently pry the terminals apart and re-use,
but it is very fiddly work and you are DIY so it will be difficult
Soldering is another option, but if you have not sodered before
Then you will likely end...
