I'm a retired teacher (electrical) and I'm not at all offended by this. A lot of the guys teaching in college that I've met are useless, one guy just said "read the book " and didn't teach at all
The 2396 course is usually 5 days training then you do an assignment based on drawings and a written exam. The assignment should take 40 hours to complete but it's working on your own at home.

An NVQ is work based evidence done with an electrician or electrical contractor. You complete a portfolio with your description of the required tasks you have performed with photos, and other supporting evidence signed by the electrician in charge.

I'm using the very useful fill in pdf reports and certificates provided here. I have to work around how to email them without them being edited by the customers and didn't want to print them then scan them, so I tried screenshot and it does work. Does anyone know a better way?
I don't know them but if Google 'distance learning electrical course" you will find a number of colleges to choose from. Distance learning is not for everyone, but if you prefer learning things on your own, as I do, you'll probably do well. Good luck and I hope you enjoy a career as an electrician.
I wouldn't compare income with other career choices. Things may be different now but after finishing high school, a five year apprenticeship, full trade test similar to the AM2, two hour closed book exam Wiring Regulations, two hour closed book exam inspection and testing, then two hour closed...
I also remember testing electrical equipment long ago, from a drill to huge plant equipment including three phase motors with a continuity / insulation tester, same principles as now, but done by responsible, qualified electricians.
