    Educating customers - wasted time

If they really are your mates, surely they’ll be happy to pay your usual rates? Our friends wouldn’t want us to do them a half-arsed job on the cheap any more than our customers would.

Which wholesaler is your preferred option and why? Is it just price?

I have found that, in spite of efforts to the contrary, round my way it really does depend on the branch ( with the exception of Electrifix/Poofix, who are nothing if not consistent). I use my local branch of Edmundson Electrical (Hereford) for 95% of my kit and they’re amazing. The prices...

    DP Isolator - How much???!!!

I’ve since spoken to them and it did. WPD charge not much less just to provide a PME connection (if possible), and even more for a 3L4P switch!!

    DP Isolator - How much???!!!

A client of mine (at my behest) had WPD out last week to fit a DP isolator distributors switch after the meter. I don’t know what they charged them as they arranged it, but 2 “engineers” turned up; they checked polarity at a socket with a plug in buzzing tester (hardly guarantees polarity, does...

When did neutral at the light switch become standard practice?

One who’d asked the client if they thought they’d ever want dinmers instead of switches (more than once, mind you) and had been told, quite emphatically, that “of course” they wouldn’t?

odd one seen today, three FCUs each for a 3KW immersion on one 6mm radial

Oughtn’t we be putting known fixed loads over 2kW on dedicated circuits any way? I’m with Murdoch; do it right or not at all.

Re-wire preference - under floorboards or removed ceiling

Ceiling down every time for me, though it tends to be unpopular with most other trades and householders, whereas no-one seems to mind floors coming up. If there are ceilings coming down anyway, plus the joyful addition of spots, it’s a no-brainier.

Fitting consumer unit ‘portrait’ not ‘landscape’

I’ve seen this sort of sh!t before. Wrong on almost all levels.

    Supply cable and switch gear

Late to the party as ever... To the OP The Cart Goes After the Horse. Engage a suitably qualified electrical contractor, hey, engage several. Give accurate, identical specifications to each and ask them to price accordingly. Then Robert might end up as your Mothers brother.

    Knipex 6 in 1 pliers

I’ve been using mine ever since I discovered them. They don’t replace everything, but with these, 160mm side cutters and screwdrivers I’m sorted for a great many tasks. That doesn’t stop me from having a bag full of Knipex though. I’m particularly fond of their double-dipped S range...

using Twin and Earth ourside and UV protection

I’m with Pete999 and davesparks. I find plenty of externally mounted Flat T&E that looks like rhino hide, and that falls apart without too much interference.

    TT and RCD protection

Last week on a new install we put 5 rods down into what seemed like sand to achieve an Ra of 132.4 ohms. We only stopped at 5 because we ran out of rods. This week we will be digging a new trench from the incoming supply building to an area of much firmer ground so that another rod will provide...

    customers clean toilets

We always carry kettle (Electric & Gas), bottled water, mugs & tea paraphernalia so that, should we hit a “dry spell”, we are ok. Most houses are ok and both ends (tea in & out) are catered for acceptably, but a couple we go to you need to wipe your feet on the way out. Fortunately, they...

    Nice soft bendy tails

Funnily enough, local DNO have been using 19 strand blue over blue & brown over brown for a couple of years now. Some of them even make quite a neat job of it too. Apparently they had some sort of exclusion deal preventing wholesalers supplying the same to us for a limited (24 month?) period...
