UK Is this meter and consumer unit location safe and upto spec? (kitchen cabinet, water pipes)

Looking at the photo I’m slightly doubting the gas pipe location meets the BS6891 rule - 15cm away from CU as far as I recall. If it were me I’d leave the service head where it is, stick a switched fuse in, run some armoured up to cupboard above and move CU as close to a part M compliant...

Does anyone use a good job tracking software?

I've just been playing with it. It's like Trello on steroids. Thanks for the heads up about it

Bonding within 600mm of gas meter.

I know what you mean but I’m trying to decide if I agree with the way you’ve explained that that as it can be taken to read ‘the nearer the mud the better’ in favour of being nearer the point of entry, as per the first half of 544.1.2. The bit about the meter being outside is often completely...

    UK Scheme/scam certificate woes

I did have to send Napit certificates but the list of requirements was a bit shorter back then I'm afraid. You could try a little ruse. If you phone NIC-EIC and say you have a JIB card, 18th and 2391, is that enough to join? They will probably say yes as the telephonists job is to get sales...

What should I do with a new crabtree loadstar board.

What I find a little bit interesting is that there was an era of MFT's e.g. Robin, early Kewtech that tried to do non-trip loop tests using D-Lok, deliberately injecting DC current to prevent the device tripping. As time progressed and devices improved, my recollection is that it simply stopped...

    UK Meter box too congested!

I agree with @SJD , if there is only one set of tails leaving the meter going through the wall, they can't really object as there is nothing there that shouldn't be there. It's all happened in the wrong order unfortunately. An alternative approach - a bigger box isn't an expensive item. It...

    RCD omission risk assessment

Tempting as it is, it never really works to think in terms of the regulations themselves when considering the risks. Changing all of the sockets and plugs to 63 amp would also comply, as discussed in a similar thread of mine. But neither fixed wiring or changing the sockets affects the safety of...

Anyone got any Megger probe tips?

Exactly - I've long abandoned Meggers own strange setup they ship with the 17 series, favouring simple compatibility with everything else that has 4mm sockets, like other clips, wander leads, EV testers etc I always have a set of these kicking around as they make great spares, working as plugs...

Testing large amount of PIR controlled lighting

Thanks. I’ve never really thought about the test current flowing back through the neutral to the SL via the fitting. If they are LED grid panels I guess the same would apply through the primary coil of the driver. Every day a school day.

Testing large amount of PIR controlled lighting

I just wondered if anyone had any tips for testing an irritating design. It's a large self-storage facility, several RCBO protected lighting circuits serving two floors, no light switches anywhere, just PIRs on radial circuits controlling about 4 lights each and there's about 30 such setups...

Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

It is a great scheme, I hope it sticks around. Talking of 'responsible adults'....my older daughter recently managed to turn 18 while on a college trip to Berlin, tying the administration department completely in knots. In the end she required different plane tickets there and back at different...

UK ENA application form for EVCP

Section F is for equipment not in the ENA database, and if you look in section E, this only comes into play if you are fitting a DC charger (which you aren't!) I typically fill in sections A,B,C and E

Megger MFT-X1, definitely a step backwards.

I’ve tried one for two weeks and I’m keeping it. The main things that convinced me: 1 user updatable firmware, so putting some trust in Megger here, quirks will get resolved in due course 2 the data transmission to CertSuite is brilliant, saves me time on jobs, and saves me time in evenings...

    Today's project, success

If you saw the Good Morning thread, you'll know what I was up to today. I've just a good stopping point. The back-story: For the last two weeks I've had the use of a shiny Megger X1. While I'm automatically biased and grumpy towards against anything new and expensive, I have to concede that an...

Good Morning Thread - Come say good morning, tell us what you've got on today. :)

Having done family things for rest of half term, I've been graciously allowed to spend the rest of today in my own little world tackling a project that I've been wanting to try for months. In front of me I have a Megger 1502, a Raspbery Pi Pico W (which is an astonishing bit of kit for the...

    DNO question

No, as long as you don’t put it anywhere in their way. Most DNOs make it a condition on the contract with the customer that a sparks is there when they move supply. SP just leave an isolator and a space and as long as it looks like you have a plan the rest is up to you!

    YORK - need a favour!

Toolstation also sell it, if I recall correctly it's threaded both ends with a coupler on one end.

    UK RCD tripping explanation

Certainly worth a try, and I would do this too. A L-E fault can often be detected this way. If it’s a N-E fault then they only tend to show up when large currents are flowing as Brian explained above. At that point it becomes impossible to work out what’s actually going on without doing some...
