Does a SPD need a dedicated MCB?

This is more like the helpful advice I needed, it does sound utterly complicated though, I thought the future was electric but it seems its nothing but a ball ache. If an electrician cant fit a simple car charger without reams of red tape then who can? Lets be honest its no harder to connect up...

Does a SPD need a dedicated MCB?

What do you think will happen if I don't bodge it? The person that gives us loads of easy well paid work will just get someone else in to do it the bodge way, but guess what, he will also get the new person to do all the easy well paid work as well and I'll end up sat at home staring at four...

Does a SPD need a dedicated MCB?

I think the bottom left 3 pole 32A MCB feeds the SPD which is original to the installation. I was going to connect the car charger to the same MCB. Seems a waste the SPD hogging 3 precious ways all to itself.

Does a SPD need a dedicated MCB?

Does a SPD need a dedicated way? I need an extra way in this unit for a 3 phase car charger As you can see its a small unit with no extra ways, the building is rented and the tenant is adamant that the board is not to be changed as he has been told no major alterations. We have already...

    £0 Pre-pay meter and EICR

Happens on every job of ours, houses are usually empty for a year or so and they are always £300-£400 in debt mostly due to the standing charge rocking up. Then they expect the joiner or whoever to top the meter up out of his own pocket just so he can use his tools.

Shall I ask my sparky to run a 6mm or 10mm cable ?

Don't try and feed multiple ovens off the same cable, you will end up with a consumer unit inside one of the cupboards.Much better to run one cable to each appliance whatever the sizes will be. As for the cables requiring plugs etc I would go off the ratings on the appliance, a 3kW oven on a...

UK Scenario where lack of supplementary bonding is dangerous

Surely one of the most important parts of supplementary bonding is to bond the radiator and hot tap/pipe to the cold one. Both the hot tap and radiator pipes could well have a voltage introduced onto them via things like the boiler electrics or immersion heater, the cold could well be isolated...

    Strange fault we had yesterday

Anyway the fault was a N-E short on the kitchen sockets which sat on the "faulty" RCD, it meggered clear at the time but the kitchen was being tiled so when whoever it was that tightened the sockets onto the new tiles it nicked the neutral wire. Because there wasn't anything plugged into the...

    Strange fault we had yesterday

Just one RCD for the sockets, back in the dark days lighting and cable didn't need RCD protection, I would imagine today's H&S rule makers would need a long sit down at even the suggestion of doing that today.

    Strange fault we had yesterday

Kind of on the right track, with the first fault back in about 2006 on a split load board it was a simple N-E fault on the socket circuit caused by the socket screw nicking the neutral wire. Because it was a brand new empty flat there wasn't anything plugged into the sockets to cause the RCD to...

    Strange fault we had yesterday

Yep, when the RCD's were swapped round the test button on the "faulty" RCD worked again and the one that was functioning fine became the "faulty" one. TN-S. Just to add, the test button did work if you pressed it 3 or 4 times so it was hit and miss, my mate was convinced the RCD was faulty...

    Strange fault we had yesterday

Yes it does, I swapped the two RCD's round and the fault was still the same, so RCD's not faulty. There were no interconnections or mixed up wiring either, every termination was in the correct breaker and this applies to all the points as well, I thought at first one leg of the upstairs sockets...

    Strange fault we had yesterday

I sorted the fault fairly quickly as it happens but only because I'd come across it once before and at the time a few people said it couldn't possibly happen they way I described it, but its happened twice now. Both jobs done by us, full re-wires. The first time was during the 16th edition...

    Bonding 😣

I don't think there are many people who actually understand what main bonding does even though they are installing 10mm "earth" cable about on every job.

    Non payment and sign off

I got the attitude from my old boss, cant remember (years and years ago) the details but some customer rang up ranting and raving about how he wasn't going to pay for this and that after one of the electricians had been round to do some work. My boss just put the phone down on him mid rant and...

    Non payment and sign off

That's in an ideal world though, I would never give anyone more credit than I could afford to lose, so if I say the client won't get the certs until I'm paid then if he/she never pays hthey never gets the certs, its that simple. I would never capitulate or compromise my terms just for the money...

    Adapting a cooker point

I can't believe they still make them, found a second hand one on ebay for £10 but they are very ugly. I'll bet the boxes are quite deep as well, with the added complication of not breaking the tiles round them.
