    Also, if you have just changed the CU, all circuits should now be protected by RCD, including the lighting so in effect the CU should have been a dual RCD type. Not necessarily, depends on type of wiring it could be in conduit or BS8436 cable.

    alarm help

    they've probably set it to go off to get the call out.!! A friend of mine went on a course about fire alarm panels and was told that it could be set to display a message to "Call Engineer" at any date he wanted.!!

    Ring Main Testing

    Nothing wrong with testing at sockets. Especially when you have more than one ring, you can't get your legs crossed. Plus you still check every point on the circuit even the board.

    Use a board with 3 rcbo's. The way you are thinking of ,you will have 2 rcd's on the lighting which is not advisable.

    Mains powered smokes taking live off the light switch

    I've said about neutrals at switches before, but everybody on here says it's ok, therefore you are alright to pick up supply from the switch. I've got a feeling that it's ok to feed smokes from lighting circuit as long as they heve battery back up.

    Red & Black Flex: when was it phased out?

    I started my apprenticeship in '74 and I can't remember installing red & black flex, the closest was the old festoon cable that you screwed the lampholders on.

    As long as the conduit is earthed it will be Ok, if you put a nail through it the breaker will trip.

    Buy yourself a coil of flexishield, bit expensive but no RCD required, comes in all sizes even 3c+e 2.5, 4c+e 2.5 It's good stuff, use it for sw drops. plus earth is equal size.

    The frequency of inspection in GN3 is only a guide,and only really applies to the time from installation to the first periodic, after that it's up to the spark doing the periodic, use your own judgement ,if the place is well maintained you may set a longer period between tests.
