Thanks Lucien, that makes a lot of sense.
Main fuse was a 63A BS88-3. No idea how old it was, but no reason not to think it was the one that went in when the flats were built. MCB was a brand new BS 60898/B 32A.
Thanks littlespark.
I was wondering who'd pick up on who replaced the fuse. The customer says the boiler installer went off to get a replacement. To be honest, I'm not sure I want to know, but it wasn't me and it wasn't the DNO. Of course that now puts them in a tricky position if they want the...
I wonder if anyone can suggest a scenario that could have made this happen.
I did a full rewire on a two bed purpose-built flat a few weeks ago. TNCS, cut-out in cupboard at the stair-well, I ran the tails to a switched fuse inside the flat and on from there to the consumer unit.
All tested...
Sorry, my mistake - I meant MegaOhms, not Ohms.
No RCDs, no SPDs and an empty property so I couldn't even find anything plugged in. I did the individual tests removing L, N and CPC from the board, so that's why I can't understand why they all had pretty much the same low reading. Wiring is...
Hi all. Changing a CU in an ex-council flat, pme system, no RCD's, and initially tried to IR test whole board L/N joined to earth, got a reading of 0.28 Ohms.
Then did each circuit individually (2 X RFC, 2 X lights, 1 X cooker), L/N joined to the circuit's CPC, and got between 0.25 and 0.30...
Hi all,
Came across this yesterday on an EICR. Cables and pipe were boxed in with MDF which, when removed, revealed some quite untidy cabling (although the cables all seemed secure enough when tugged) which also passed behind the horizontal gas pipe. I can't find the relevant reg number, but it...
Thanks all. Finally spoke to the DNO today who (verbally) said they were happy with the long tails being protected by their fuse. Not what I expected from them tbh, but the call was recorded so I'm going to leave it at that. Thanks for all your help.
Hi all,
Just doing a newbuild where the DB will be about 8m from the cut out/meter box. 25mm tails run in conduit on the surface of the outside wall then direct through the wall to the DB inside the house. DNO have provided a (non-fused) isolator in the meter cupboard after their 100A cut out...
Hi,
I've not really got involved in underfloor heating before, but a customer asked me to replace her OJ Microline manual stat for her bedroom heating which had packed up with a replacement generic version she got from Amazon. I assumed it'd be a straight swap so said yes and wired it up, the...
Thanks for all the help everyone. Just as an update, if I'm honest I still can't quite understand how this makes sense, but I went round last week and replaced the SWA sub-main from the house to the garage and that solved the problem, all readings acceptable, even with the garage unit screwed...
Thanks Ackbar. So does that mean I could test that by bypassing the RCD on the garage unit for my IR test? If the reading is then acceptable your theory is right, timber mounting gives the practical solution and conundrum solved?
Thanks for the replies all. I also thought about something going through the conductor to the wall without hitting another conductor.
The customer wants a couple more sockets putting in so I'm going back tomorrow and will check over every inch of cabling/accessories (fortunately not too much of...
Yes, telectrix, low IR when DB screwed into concrete garage.
And I wondered the same thing Dave, but made some new holes in the garage wall and the same thing happened. To be honest, I haven't tested the armour, just between the conductors. I'll do that tomorrow. But assuming I find nothing, I...
Can anyone help with this one I've been scratching my head over for a week?
Called to a customer whose garage RCD keeps tripping. TNCS supply, three core SWA submain to RCD garage unit, two radial circuits (6A lights, 16A sockets). IR test from main board on whole garage installation 0.01 mega...
Hi all,
Was called to a job today with intermittent RCD tripping from the garage. Standard domestic TNS with three core SWA from the house to an (inaccessible) junction box down the side of the garage where it joins to 10mm T&E which then runs on surface plastic trunking to a metal-clad CU on...
