A bit off topic but this is the still current 'guidance' from my previous life, which I work to unless there is a good reason not to.
Orders, intentions and suggested action
40. In DW, some words and phrases have specific meanings and are used to express
orders, intentions or suggested action...
You are a hard man Ted!
MCS do not help themselves by using the word guidance in the document title and then issuing instructions in it. Guidance would normally be taken to imply some discretion. And no doubt someone would debate whether the shall in that context was an instruction or the...

They go into a tripower and I have not been recording performance of each side separately. It is on my list of things to do if I wind down work and take up hobby electronics! I suspect the MCS tables are reasonably accurate to compare performance.
The wording the Samil email would have to satisfy is this (712.411.3.2.1.2):
"..... Where the PV converter is, by construction, not able to feed d.c. fault currents into the electrical installation, an RCD of type B to IEC 62423 is not required."
The email to my mind does NOT satisfy that, so...
I give payback and roi figures based on the fit at today's prices. As fit is inflated by rpi, it is effectively a npv figure already if using it in a dcf. This has been discussed before and there are others on the site who do more sophisticated calculations, building in electricity price rises...
Unless there is better evidence, then optimiser is half the price and under half the weight of micro-inverter, so probably has about half the number of electrical components, so probably is twice as reliable.
I am glad Enphase are putting their money where their mouth is. I hope it turns out...
I have done a handful of Solar Edge (SE) installs and been pleased with them. Sadly I do not have good comparative performance data that will settle the argument one way or the other. But the SE solution seems particularly good where individual panels at a time get taken out by a shading...
For those that enjoy reading the regs, the draft for public comment of amendment 3 is available for download.
IET Wiring Regulations updates - IET Electrical
You need to log on, but anyone can.
Sticking to the PV aspects, there are some minor tweaks to section 712 that:
- clarify where the...
I take on any and all roles myself as a micro-company, pulling in a few tradesmen (mainly from a local builder) over the course of a year for support on particular jobs. I cannot see that model working easily for new entrants - just too many courses to complete. I have done some Biomass...
As suggested above, probably one rcd more sensitive than the other. A 30 mA rcd is within spec tripping anywhere between 15 mA and 30 mA.
You may also have cured a minor earth leak in that rats nest just by moving wires around.
Just to finish off my comment above that I had fitted my first G83/2 Solar Edge inverter, I have supplied the correct G83/2 test results to WPD which they have accepted. However WPD have issued their standard letter back saying we may connect it providing it complies with G83/1 and we have the...
This year it was the turn of heat pump as my technology to be given the third degree on. As I had not done a heat pump installation in the last year I had to do a full mis3005 design of an imaginary gshp installation, which was a lot of work.
Do not know whether such a list exists or will do. But no doubt all the manufacturers who want to sell in UK are getting the tests done or have done so already. Have a look on their websites.
I fitted a Solar Edge inverter last week which was compliant with G83/2 rather than G83/1. It has...
I had a look at g83/2 and thought it was sufficiently vague that provided:
- there is a downstream mcb to provide overload protection
- the prospective fault current at the downstream mcb was enough to blow the suppliers fuse
then it meets g83/2 and 7671.
But there is a serious risk that a...
Useful to know.
But, not obvious why they should charge any ongoing fee. On the commercial RHI, OFGEM let you have a heat meter installed by a competent person and then you read it yourself, send them the readings and the income arrives.
Perhaps I am looking at it the wrong way round and...
from notice 708/6:
Reduced rate applies to ..... solar panels .....
It then defines solar panels as:
2.9 Solar panels Solar panels include all systems that are installed in, or on the site of, a building and that are:
solar collectors such as evacuated tube or flat plate systems...
