    Generator sizing help

To be honest, the set up is less than ideal, he has the generator that is at most used to run individual pieces of workshop equipment, welder, compressor etc, and to top up his off grid battery storage for his house. The Genny is only started as and when he needs it. Probably rules out the...

    Generator sizing help

Hi all. I've been out to look at a mates new (to him) air compressor. It's 15kw 3phase star-delta run. He's off grid and currently has a 20kVa Genny running his farm. This is obviously undersized for starting the compressor, when tried the Genny bogs down and contactors start chattering. He's...

    Earth rod into limestone

Evening all. Been to start first fix of a couple of existing farm buildings. The owner has had a brand new 3 phase supply with no earth provided. The issue is the farm buildings have been partially dug into a limestone hillside, no soil of any depth within 10m of buildings. I'm looking for...

    Flashing LED Floodlights

Last night they didn't come on, so I'm guessing whatever was causing the flashing has given up the ghost. Or they've had enough of neighbours complaining and turned them off.

    Flashing LED Floodlights

I did think that but it only blinks off for around half a second then back on for 5 seconds. Any photocells I've come across haven't responded that quickly. Or that regularly. It's the same all night.

    Flashing LED Floodlights

Bit of a random one. A commercial yard down the road from me has installed 4 floodlights, they appear to switched by a dawn to dusk sensor. Every 5 second they flash off then on again for 5 seconds then flash off then on again for 5 seconds ad infinitum. Any ideas what could cause this? I'm...

    Main bonding gas

Fairly sure there's the words "where practicable" included in the reg wording. So in my head if it's not possible to get a 10mm to the garage it is acceptable to bond in the bungalow. Tin hat on

    Install Electricians Forums App

Installed it the other day. Works in exactly same way as the mobile site, which is all I use anyway. Link was a banner at top of the page, couldn't miss it.

    Lost a phase.

That was kind of my thoughts. I did recommend he didn't try starting it again

    Lost a phase.

So today, I get a phone call from one of the bosses customers. No power or lights in workshop. (3 phase DB feeds single phase DB). Says the lights flicker on when 3 phase compressor tries to run. My guess over phone was a lost phase, or neutral problem The boss went out later and confirmed my...

    UK Terminating parallel supply

I must be missing something. How is it easier to run in 2x 6mm instead of 1x 10mm.

    Which downlights do you use?

Brightsource solo are the goto at work, been fitting them for 4 years or so now. Probably fitted 1500 and been back to 2 or 3. They have 3 colour temperatures switched under the bezel, 3 magnetic bezels, and the new ones have a push fit connector.

    "Dumb" Voltage optimisers

    @freddo you're right it's at transformer with 3 tap offs 10, 8 and 6% drop. It's a stupid design

    "Dumb" Voltage optimisers

That's what I thought. A couple of volts off the supply voltage and the "optimised" voltage is outside limits. It's a rural location so I would expect fluctuations
  19. F

    "Dumb" Voltage optimisers

Optimiser is only a couple of months old. Incoming supply voltage was around 228. I've not come across one before, but it doesn't seem a particularly intelligent way to go about optimising, given the fluctuations of the supply voltage.

    "Dumb" Voltage optimisers

Called out today to fluorescent lights flashing on and off. Only 207v at fittings. after abit of a head scratch. Turns out they have had solar PV recently installed, a voltage optimiser was fitted at same time. Found the optimiser, it had 3 outputs 10% 8% and 6% reductions, originally installed...
