Had an interesting one today, ring circuit blown the Mcb in a kitchen apparently a few times over last day or so. It has blown once when nothing was really in use in kitchen so kind of ruling out overload.
When turned up and turned it back on it held for maybe 5 minutes before blowing again…...
Hello,
I’ve got my AM2S coming up and I’ve been revising like mad but I’m stuck on something.
I’ve read that it’s a 3 phase board with just one RCBO for the ring circuit. Assuming they want me to do a global IR test, can I take the conductors out of the RCBO, switch it off, and then test...
I have installed a circuit for an oven and carried out all of the relevant testing so far. Apart from a neon on the double pole isolation switch, there is no current using equipment connected to the circuit yet as the property is empty. In this situation, would one just make a note on the...
Evening chaps,
I've been asked to do a visual inspection, and an insulation resistance test on a fishing boat, which is working off 24v, this is a new ruling apparently, and without me signing it off as ok, the boat is currently docked, and not allowed to go out fishing. The visual checks...
Looking for some guidance here. I'm currently shadowing a guy and we're testing a new extension on a school. 3 phase TNCS supply from the original busbar. Feeds a section board and from the section board it feeds 4 3 phase DB's. The DBs have one feed in and then split to a separate power and...
I have a 2 metre T&E cable. I applied a IR test (500v) across P and N to E with the other end of the cable safely sitting on the floor and it reported the meter maximum. As expected.
I then completely cut through the N conductor on the cable and repeated the test. It still reports the meter...
I am self-teaching fault-finding and testing, but I can't wrap my head around insulation resistance tests.
From my understanding you send 500V for domestics down the conductors using an Multi-Function Tester,
and the values should be over 1M Ohm, now my question is why should the resistance be...
Hello everyone, I was just wondering how do you disconnect neon lights from socket outlets when doing insulation resistance test, as this will effect the readings, thanks.
Hi Everyone
Just a question bothering me as you cannot do Insulation resistance test on smoke detectors as they can become damaged so obviously smoke detectors are sensitive but they are also installed on lighting circuit so if perform low insulation resistance test 250V between Live and...
I know you are not supposed to do a insulation test on circuits that are protected by an RCD at 500v because it may damage the electronic components inside the RCD so that's why you switch the RCD off before you test the individual circuits, however, what if the circuits are all protected by...
Hi guys,
Hoping someone can clarify some things here. I had a socket replaced in my kitchen recently and as part of this, the electricians did an Insulation Resistance test and told me the reading was very low at just over 1 mega ohms. They advised me to basically rewire the ring (at...
Might be trivial question. My understanding is that we test on either leg of the ring since both legs make up a radial, but some say they test both legs at once, i.e. LL to NN, it would make sense if the other leg is not insulated since this is a live test, but I don't see why not if the other...
Greetings!
Newbie here! We have 3 phase installation in our Lighting dimmer rack. During Insulation Resistance testing on Earth-Nuetral, readings was 0.33Mohm on 500v test. What causede the failed test and how can I troubleshoot? Thank you!
Markus
Doing new supplies for a school new Shneider 3 phase & N MCCB panel board. 50mm 4 core SWA one end made off in the board earth fly lead from banjo to earth terminal. The other end gland made off in gland (fly lead not made off yet) 3 phases and neutral just hanging there. Done installation...
On a new install of a shower circuit, with a neon isolater, is it better to use choc blocks to bypass neon isolater or would it be ok to just test live-earth (live being neutral and live combined) and miss the live-live test?
If testing just live-earth, would you write it down in details of...
Back in 2013 I had a Domestic Electrical Installation Condition Report done on my rented property - nothing horribly major but one thing I didn't understand...
I had a C3 code for "0 ohms readings for I.R test for sockets & lighting (unable to remove all loads sockets, lighting had electronic...
Hi all.
I'm a 4th year electrician currently awaiting to finish my trade test. (FICA in Scotland) the only parts I have to pass is the testing part and fault finding.
I'm currently studying testing as this is something I have done the minimum of onsite.
Could someone tell me how I would...
Hi guys,
I have what may seem a basic question.
If a cable has been skinned at some point along the circuit would an IR test pick that up in the readings?
Many thanks
Looking for some advice on how to carry out a IR test on a 3-phase motor and a TP & N skt, these are parts of a module I have failed on a test and am looking to see where I am going wrong and what the normal procedure for carrying out this test would be?
