As part of a Peridic Inspection test, on a 230v circuit having luninaires in a Explosive Atmophere area - the reason why the switch controlling the luninaires has been left in the off position?
Could someone explain to me how you IR test a new Consumer Unit Installation with a Dual RCD Board (Wylex) in an old board using the L to N Jumper lead without damaging the RCD's in the Board?
Also, where do you get a jumper lead from (other then making one i guess...)
Thanks in advance... :)
Hi lads, Just want to pick your brains . When you do an IR test and you cant disconnect current using equipment for what ever reason, the regs say you can connect line & neutral together and test to earth. Where would you put the result in on the test sheet? Line/Line or Line/Earth...
Just finished chasin round a house tryin to find the cause of the 0M ohm reading on a ring circuit IR test. I spent about 45 minutes ruling out the central heating which was fed of the ring. Nope not that. So back to basics, break the ring, find out which half the problem is on. Several sockets...
just a quick one
if i did a insulation resistance test between L N (together) and earth would i still need to disconnect bulbs and voltage sensitive equipment???
cheers in advance
Afternoon all.
Just been for an initial look at a potential CU change. Customer has an old Wylex fuseboard, installed when his property was rewired 20 years ago. I did a 250v IR test across the N and E bars and got a reading of 3.4Mohms. Each N tested individually to the E bar resulted in...
Hi, I've been testing my house and few others in the area as a way of gaining experience.
I'm mostly getting satisfactory results expect for insulation resistance testing on the ring circuits. I follow procedure and remove all plugs from sockets and turn them on but when I do the test I get a...
Hi all,
I'm testing a 35 year old system, with 11 circuits split across 2 RCDs. 3 of these are lighting circuits 2 come out fine with an IR test but one fails L-N with 0.0 ohms.
This lighting circuit is comprised of 3 ordinary lights, 3 chandaliers and 3 fluourescents. A number of switches...
Hi guys,
I'm doing some revision for 2391 and I've built a test rig to practice on, just one radial (lights) and a ring.
The testing was all going fine until the IR tests.
Results were as follows
Whole installation:
R1 to Rn = 0.13MOhms:eek:
(R1+Rn) to R2 = >299MOhms
R1 to R2...
Am i correct in thinking that if you did an insulation resistance test part way along a radial back to the CU with it switched on and just the mcb for that circuit tripped that you should get a zero reading between N and CPC (with a TN-C-S supply).
cheers.
Easy one for ya, when carrying out an IR test on a radiel such as a cooker feed. Do you normally pull the hob and disconnect the cable and then test IR or would connecting Live & Neutral together and testing to earth ok?
Cheers

used the green croc clip on the neu and i put the red croc clip on the line...
I always seem to have doubts before i press that TEST Button at 500v, Ive got in the habbit of always slinging 250v down before i go upto 500v.
And the past few IR test's ive done are always very low... Just my bad luck i suppose.
I will test at 250v and see what i get, if i get the 0.00...
I have to test shop today but it not possible to disconect every light fitting (1200 * 600 fittings)and other ones with electronic ballists . Also i can not get in to disconnect the tillsand other sockets what do you think the best way to tes the IR on this
hey all!!
would a smoke alarm circuit be vunerable or give out false readings on the live insulation resistance test? or is it worth me just connecting the lives and testing to earth? well and the interconnecter.
cheers all :)
