Hi lads, yesterday morning there was a fault with the incoming electricity supply in that there was only 140 V between live and neutral instead of the usual 230 V.
Could anyone provide me with an explanation for this?
Thanks
Hi All, firstly to introduce myself I'm not an electrician but was hoping to get a bit of advice on an electrical issue I have. Basically we wanted to get a boiler service but the plumber would not touch the boiler as he said we have electrical volts running through the house (radiators, sink...
Afternoon all,
Just after a bit of advice and clarification on an issue that was presented to me today. For a bit of background I work in the telecoms industry and today was notified of a manager for a client I work for, advising live working in DC distribution boards. More specifically...
How many sparks would work in a square D KQ 3phase DB board if it was LIVE i was putting a new mcb in a live DB and it blown the MCCB at section board i tested between phases and there was no polarity between any conductors switched the MCCB and it tripped again
WHAT COULD OF HAPPENED
I had an odd one today.
I was investigating a problem with a light that was not working. As it turns out, it was multiple loose connections causing the problem.
The circuit is wired in old unearthed two core cables making the contact voltage tester a waste of time.
At the light fitting there...
Hi.. We have just had a new kitchen fitted, a few sockets moved, led lights, new supply for the electric oven and a rcd board fitted.
They told us they had checked the supply before they started and everything was fine, we knew to meet regs the board needed replacing, during installation the...
Hey guys,
My boss wants me terminating new supplies in a -48v d.c Distribution board. Easy enough but the board cannot be turned off due to critical load.
Now my question is this. Is it safe and or legal to work on live -48v d.c. and what would the consequences and dangers of possible short or...
Hello, ive just been to look at a job with a light not working, after checking found voltage between live and neutral is 170v, between live and earth is 230v, is it just a case of a neutral issue, eg, loose connection, water ingress any suggestions would be great, cheers
Thought I'd start of a topic about all the amazing natural events we never see but are amazing if you ever come across them....

Hi,
I'm a little perplexed by a simple light fitting replacement that has turned unexpectedly interesting.
Replacing the fitting I linked the loop to a junction block and sealed it with insulation tape (as the new fitting didn't have any connectors as standard. I connected the live and...
came across a strange one today. Had a 3 core cable to a gas boiler and there was a fault on the boiler so when tested got 145v across the live and switch wire. Disconnected the switch wire at one end and still got 145v. Thought bad insulation so replaced cable. Still there ! Touched the end it...
Firstly - apologies if this is in the wrong place but I couldn't seem to post in the DIY area.
I have removed a socket cover in order to decorate and replaced it to find it didn't work. This socket is in a bedroom on a separate ring to the main sockets, with just the two bedrooms sockets on it...
Hi Guys
Got a call the other day. Electrician in hospital. No power. Please help.
He was working on a 8 way 3 phase board and attempted to insert a single phase MCB without turning off the power first (trying to be helpful). Unfortunately he mispositioned the MCB and managed to short 2 phases...
Hello All
I looking for a (pen type?) of tester to find true live in a lighting circuit etc., any thoughts would be appreciated.
I believe they do exist but I cannot trace one (sorry of the pun)
Many thanks and enjoy the summer...

Evening all,
i was changing some down lights today and when I came to live test the lights I noticed I was only getting 85v live to earth? Also neutral to earth is showing 50v and live to neutral 230v.
im guessing it's a neutral fault somewhere, I will be back at the job tomorrow to...
Replacing a ceiling rose that was taken off some time ago and not replaced in an old house. 2 reds and 2 blacks, I have identified which one of the blacks is switched live using a multimeter. But it appears the 2 blacks also are connected when tested with the meter, indicating it is both a...
