Am I right by saying what ever I add to a circuit has got to comply with 17th even if the existing circuit doesn't ie if I come off socket circuit that has no rcd protection that socket I put in has to have rcd protection

After fitting a low voltage fan to an existing lighting circuit, does a test have to be carried out on the whole circuit or just the extra part installed. Secondly does it have to be a eic or is a minor works acceptable as it is an addition to an existing circuit.

If you're doing minor works on a lighting circuit (adding/moving lights) and you arn't personally chasing any cables into a wall but you've a sneaking suspicion there may be a few existing switchdrops at <50mm depth....would you insist on RCD protection?
Generally I try and RCD everything...
