Hi, as I've said I'm not an electrician but studying C&G in my own time and have worked as a mate.
I've just had a qualified sparky upgrade my CU to a split board 10 way dual RCD. He has run a 4mm2 cable (from a 40A MCB protected by one of the RCDs) to my hut and will be coming back to wire up...
Was called out to a job to fix some damaged sockets for a landlord between tenants. Found this old Ashley & Rock CU.
Advised landlord that it is non-compliant, no RCD, mixed manufacturers etc. and that it should really be upgraded before he rents out again. Her response was that it's always...
just a quick one, I’m doing 18th edition next week but have been asked to quote for changing pendant lights for new stainless steel lights. Assuming all bonding, wiring and tests check out etc, does this now require an rcd?
So last night I went to put my heater on in my room, it’s one of those oil filled ones that you plug in. So went to turn on my light and no power. So checked everywhere else in the house and all working. Checked the fuse board and nothing has tripped.
So checked the plug on the heater and it’s...
been to a job looking at a replacement shower ,having looked at the shower .nice job ,but no shower RCD ,I have spoken to the customer and have told them should have been a shower RCD in play, now considering it the old wylex 3036 board and now needs a RCD putting in , the fuse is 3036

This is a new one to me.. a small spur circuit (3 double sockets) on ground floor, several small load items connected - table lamp, assorted AV kit (TV, Amp, DVD). On just these 3 sockets only, the power cuts, sometimes flicking on - off - on again. Other times it'll stay off for 1-3 minutes...
What code would you give when doing EICR for a property that has no supplementary bonding in a bathroom, there is no RCD on any circuit but zs and insulation tests are good,
Is it acceptable to measure the resistance between the shower and pipework, if it's under 0.05 ohm's take it as bonded...
Hi all,
A house has no rcd protection and im not able to change to an rcbo on the relevant circuit. A new CU is not an option.
A new socket is required in one room where the only other power source is on an opposite wall therefore I see the best option is to chase the wall out where the new...
Hi just thought I'd throw this out here for a bit of light entertainment after the @Marvo thread (phew!)
So brother in law asked me to look at EICR which returned unsatisfactory. I have not looked at the installation to ascertain as to Class 1 or 2 fittings in the premises are installed. The...

Evening all, I was doing some repairs to emergency lights in a school and when I went into the switch room to find the fuses for the lights I found the heating board by mistake, reading down the chart I soon realised my error but then saw that there was no RCD protection to the 15 or so heaters...
Hi all,
I have done a small job of installing a radial circuit and adding a spur to a ring final circuit.
I am not too sure about the existing installation. It is in a commercial premises office type with a single phase CU. I have an issue with the fact that there is not an RCD to be found. I...

I just realised that I have a ip45 rated extractor fan in my ensuite, located on the ceiling above the shower, that has no rcd protection. It is controlled via a 3 way switch, that also controls downlights and a light above a cabinet. Should I be worried? Is it safe? How urgently should I get a...

hello chaps,
I have a battle going on in a new position I am employed in with the statutory compliance manager, i have advised him that dew to the new 3rd amendment all 20amp sockets are now required to be protected by an RCD,
I have added an extra socket to an existing ring which has no...
Just completed a site visit regarding moving two existing 13amp double sockets further along the wall (Chasing out, reinstalled, re-plaster etc. how lovely!) However there’s no additional protection provided by RCD as the CU is too old and the client doesn’t won’t to upgrade due to cost! Advice...
Hi,
Ive gone to look at a job where the customer wants two spotlights added into the bathroom.
The board being 3036 spec and no rcd.
What options do i have other than change the board or provide rcd protection via a seperate rcd isolator.
It feels a lot of work and i want to ensure no...
I have recently carried out an EICR at a Working Men's Club, there are offices, function rooms, kitchen etc.
None of the circuits have RCD protection, majority of wiring is within the walls, (less than 50mm)
The staff are not skilled, the function rooms are my main concerns for this, as...
Been out to replace an oven on an installation which pre dates the need for RCD's so only has MCB's, the earthing arrangement is TT. As I am only changing the oven this need not be RCD protected but is the maximum Ze still 200ohms?
