I installed a replacement 300VA transformer, fitting a 2.5mm from secondary to junction box where it splits out, feeding 5 x 50w halogens.
Cable run between the transformer and junction box is less than 18 inches.
The casing of the transformer indicates 2.5mm - you'd struggle to get anything...
Still a relatively inexperienced so sorry if these seem obvious/dumb questions.
