Hi guys. Am I right in interpreting the regs with regards to rcds that they need to be rated equal to or higher than the main supply fuse? So not to overload them? Or am I reading it wrong?
Thanks on advance.

Peeps,
I have been asked to run a supply for a single phase, 3.2a extract fan (systemair AW500E4).
Is it a requirement, recommended or just good practice to include thermal overload protection in such a situation?
Thanks.
Good morning all. So question; if you’re making additions to an existing circuit, but the new cable is not min 50mm deep in wall or mechanically protected and the current circuit is not RCD protected do you tell customer that RCD protection is required as per the regs? My thought is yes and...
I have a Liquid Nitrogen tank getting installed on site, its 16m high adjacent to a taller building and I'm providing the power to it. There are plenty of earth spike locations near it but, purely from observation other sites don't appear to have any means of protection so, how do I know if it...
Hi guys,
So I have a domestic scenario where off peak E7 storage heating is installed.
Client has asked for a DB upgrade and has opted for surge protection.
Currently they have separate ON and OFF peak Wylex fuse boards tailed individually from the origin, the meter is 2 metres away.
If I...
Coming across a few installations with no RCD protection. How are folks finding it out there when doing minor alterations / additions to existing lighting circuits with no RCD protection bearing in mind 18th Edition requirements. Appreciate every installation is different. Are folks replacing...
I work with temporary electrical installations to construction sites at the moment and have a query related to supply arrangements.
The supply earthing sysytem is a TT type. The main cut out fuses I've been told are 200A and the supply tails are 70mm in a three phase arrangement.
These 70mm...
Good Evening
Have been testing a converted office block to flats last week and have found many circuits non RCD protected that serve high level Spurs in the landlords corridors (3 inches below ceiling). I was told that they don’t need RCD protection as the cable runs in between two metframe...
Hello all, first post by a new member so apologies for any posting faux pas in advance. (Hopefully this is the correct place to ask this rather long question)
I’m in the process of re fitting my kitchen and was planning on making a couple of minor changes to the wiring installation. All of the...
Evening all,
Just attended elex exeter and see there's a big push on these SPDs coming as standard now in domestic consumer units. Hager, Lewden and Contactum to name just 3.
I have had at least 2 clients in the last few months whose appliances have been damaged by apparently surges on the...
Hi, looking to broaden my knowledge regarding earthing and protection. EA Technology have been mentioned as having decent courses in this area. I would like to hear from anyone who has been on training with them even if not in this field as often a standard will run through most training...
Afternoon all,
Looking for a little guidance, other than doing sub mains in armoured I don’t do much three phase work.
I’m looking to install some final
Circuits for some three phase cooking equipment but I find myself stuck on a few things, as the sockets will be over 16amp they will need to...
I'm due to start working in a building which houses lots of flats over 6 floors with 2 internal communal stairs. I'm due to replace 13 ceiling lights per floor/stairs from a halogen bulkhead to a ELD 17w LED microwave/emergency bulkhead.
Each floor is fed from a Square D B6 QOE MCB on a 3...
If I was replacing an existing light fitting in a domestic premises, making no alteration or addition to the circuitry, would I then be obligated to provide that circuit with 30mA RCD protection if it didn't already have it?
The existing C/U is at almost ceiling height in a room and the old tails are plastered in the wall below it before going outside to the meter cupboard (they have no protection and are just covered in plaster). The tails have to be upgraded when the C/U is replaced, so I could take the option of...

Hi, I'm Dave and I was wandering if I could have help with something.
If I were to wire a 5KW motor what means of protection should be incorporated into the inverter for compliance with BS 7671?
Thanks! :)
Hi,
My QS believes an RCBO provides fault protection only, and we have to enter N/A on the test certs for the additional protection. Is this correct? We deal with TN-C-S and TN-S domestic. I assumed it provided both
Thanks!
