First fist IR test on RFC

Just carried out an IR test on a first fix RFC. It’s one of two RFC’s that I’m using in a complete renovation of my house. At the moment plasterers are sill working their way round and at each socket outlet I’ve wago’d the conductors and confirmed end to end continuity. r1 -0.83, r2-1.4 and rn -...

New Build IR Testing RFC, can't find the issue

I am currently testing a 2 bed flat, all other circuits read clear. Flat Ring not so much. Using a Megger MFT1721 L - E Reading 300Mohms but slowly L - N Reading 400 Mohms but slowly N -E Reading 200Mohms but slowly Have tried breaking the ring and narrowing down the problem but both sides...

Weird IR results? At a Switched Fcu in RFC

So I am doing an insulation resistance test on a new flat and I get a dodgy L-E reading on the IR. I won't go above 20Meg and it fluctuates. Identified where the problem is and its a switched spur. When cables are removed all test +299 including the load which is 2 sockets. When all are put back...

RFC LN-E IR 0.15 ohm - why was the RCD not tripping?

Small job adding a few sockets, while doing some preliminary checks I found this reading on the socket circuit!:( After hours of fault finding - Searching for any possible connected loads - Questioning if the SFS's were DP then disconnecting the load N (found SP SPS's online) -...

    Checking installation methods of RFC

Hi all, Been asked to installed some sockets in our sports hall. These are to power 4x 3kW blow heaters (yes, I know little blow heaters aren't the most efficient method of heating a large room like this, I've made my arguments and may be given the budget to do a proper IR heater install in...

PIR done. high R1 on RFC. does this need a code?

PIR done on domestic. 32a ring final circuit with RCD protection. R1 slightly high, most likely due to poor connection (0.92ohms) R2 ( 0.54). Does this need coding? Zs is .53 so no non compliance there, but ob there is a clear fault on the R1.

    Continuity RFC error??Help please

Hi I have just recently completed & passed a bronze domestic installer course & am trying to complete a Periodic test at my home. I had my house rewired about 10 years ago so thought it might be a good place to start. I having a problem with the end to end continuity test of a ring final...

    Electric Radiators on an RFC

Here's one for a Sunday. I need some advice please. I went to quote for a job yesterday, where my client is replacing the aged electric convector panel heaters in her flat with some new electric radiators. I was asked to remove one of the old ones. All the existing heaters are connected to...

    Ring Continuity fault on RFC

I came across a fault on a RFC, no continuity on r1 and rn. I had continuity on r2. The work was part of a bathroom refurbishment, where a socket was in part of the extended room. I had to move the socket to and adjacent wall to make it accessible. Discovered the fault before moving it. OCPD is...

    Obtaining R2 value on RFC

If for whatever reason you can't do an R1+R2 test on a ring final circuit (unable to identify opposite legs). There's also an option on the paperwork for the R2 value... Am I correct in thinking that you do an end to end test on the CPC's which would give you r2, then just divide it by 4 to...

    Minor Predicament over RFC Length

Hi, I have just started a new build today, its a large U shaped bungalow with vaulted ceilings etc. I have split the property down into a lot of circuits to help with things due to cable runs etc. I have just wired a section of it today, I was going to do it all in 4mm radials, but by the...

    Adding sockets to RFC

Want to add two double sockets to one of my ground floor RFCs. Was initially thinking that it would have to be a FCU to a spur. Would it be better practice to just incorporate them as part of the ring? Sockets will be running a TV and either PS4 or Xbox depending on what FA junior is in to. Not...

    RFC Cable Size Question!

Ok it is unlike me to ask a question like this but it has been a very, very, very long day and I'm questioning my own plans. Basic question really :sweatdrop: Customer is converting a very large basement room into a kitchen. I've been rushed in at the last minuet whilst the builders are...

    RFC in Steel Conduit

I plan to install steel conduit (used as cpc) in a garage / workshop. I intend to run the conduit in a complete loop around the garage, i.e. starting at one point, going around all four walls and then back to the point at which I started. I want to do this because it makes wiring easier, i.e...

    RFC jointed under the floor

Went to a job Wednesday evening to an "earth neutral fault" to find a continuity between them of .12 Started taking sockets off and keep finding one cable at each outlet. Few boards up and start seeing junction boxes. With the customer knowing I'd be potentially pulling boards up all night, he...

Dedicated 32a2.5mm rfc for underfloor heating

Hello all, doing rewire at the moment and i have pit underfloor heating on dedicated ring to save cable. No reason why not right? Conductors in parallel and all that. Not using fcu's just using stat as DP isolator. 7 zones/stats. Design current ok with Ref method B. Am I doing the right...

Testing RFC in earthed steel conduit...

Excuse my ignorance on this, never had to test a RFC when the conduit was being used as the CPC. Obviously can't do the usual test for continuity so can't tick that box on the form, will just note that it's an earthed conduit set up. Where I get more confused is the R1+R2 measurement seeing as...

    RFC testing shenanigans

Hello Chap/ettes, Testing a RFC today. End-End values spot on: 0.19/0.21/0.34. All IR tests good bar N1-CPC2 which was 0.0 mega ohms. N2-CPC2 was >299 mega ohms. Why, if I am getting 0.21 and 0.34 on the end-end am I not getting 0.0 m ohms on both neutrals? Is it to do with the resolution of...

RFC testing , downstairs ring going upstairs to a long radial

so end to end L-L 0.4 N-N 0.4 E-E 1.1 very reasonable , but when the l-n are crossed over at the consumer unit . ok down stairs but the reading goes up to 16 ohms upstairs but when l-e are crossed over at the consumer unit the last four sockets upstairs give no reading. at this point i am...

    Home extension, RFC extension

So working on an extension for a client, having the living room extended. Existing ring sockets (same circuit) on the existing wall either side of the arch cut out. Client asked whether I could just connect each end of the new socket ring cable run (4 sockets low potential load) to an existing...
