Most of the work I do is additions and alterations in domestic properties, and other than swapping accessories and lights in new-builds for fancier ones, the majority of the work is in older, "traditional build" houses. I've come across a range of interesting construction methods, including...
Hey!
I bought a few simple on/off switches that you plug into a socket, and they have a single output which is either on or off depending on a toggle on the switch. It's AC current.
However, as I put a LED onto one of them, I noticed it was dimly lit even after the switch was set to off...
i'm currently in a position alot of people are in, im 22 and currently hold the level 3 2365 and have about a year of industrial electrical experience.
my current company isn't really working out, and i really want to go for the NVQ. alot of the portfolio and the AM2 seem a bit intimatading...
Tried pulling some 2.5mm T&E through 10m of 20mm flexi conduit the other day with a draw tape, although I did succeed it was a bit of a wrestle.
Does anyone have any clever tricks to make this easier? Perrhaps some cable lube or some other smart idea.
Thanks in advance.
Had a bit of a ‘discussion’ today with another electrician.
Basically found a light switch in which the radial cable for a socket directly below (but about 3ft lower) passed through.
Other electrician said it was wrong and shouldn’t be done.
My take was that it is, at best, a bit of bad...
I have had a kitchen extesion built on an old property (c.1810), which has an unusual consumer unit situation. Part of the property has only a first floor, with a driveway underneath (originally to get carts under for deliveries), with the consumer unit, meter, gas meter etc in a cupboard on the...
Hi, Recently I had solar panels fitted and realised how they have done it and I hope someone will be able to give me advice how bad and dangrous workmanship that is.
1. They trilled through the slate roof so hooks rest on the slates and then going into rafters. Basically slate became load...
I have been asked to install an external socket below the meter box. The consumer unit is directly behind the meter box and I plan to put the socket on its own circuit. The easiest route for the cable would be out of the CU, through the meter box and out of the bottom into the socket. My...
Hi!
I’d like to install a pedestal-mounted (230 V, 30 A max - programmable) EV charger close to my driveway, which ends about 12 feet away from the house, on the other side of a landscaped rock wall of sorts. While I am at it, I would like to oversize the circuit to allow a second EV charger to...
I have a slightly odd requirement that means I am wanting to route a 3 core 4mm SWA cable (14mm outside diameter) from outside through a cavity wall into a garage to the isolator just inside. The cable is actually carrying DC feed from a small solar ground installation.
How should I shield the...
Hi all,
Just moved into a house and typically now finding a fair few issues. Hoping to have an EICR done at some point, would've done this before we bought it but the house was renovated and rewired in 2013/14 and we had the regs papers for it so went ahead without.
A bit of further digging in...
Hi,
I wanted to slightly re-route a badly routed 6mm2 twin and earth flat cable, that leaves my utility room through the plasterboard, the wall and then to a junction box on the outside wall. I disconnected the Wago connectors in the junction box and pulled the cable through, but now can't get...
I need 6 switching light circuits to control 12V LED light in Zone 1 of a pool, the problem is that Zone 1 is as you open the door to the building.
I been thinking about using a 230v to 12v transformer in the plant room to a grid switch near the pool. This could switch 12v to a 230v contactor...
Despite all my interests, I love photography since childhood. This is the beautiful art of capturing the moment. Here are some of my shots that show my point of view.
I have a new combo meter box and 200A main shut off installed outside professionally. It has 4/0 service line coming into it and I have confirmation from the electric company that I am good for 200A service supplied to the house. Previously, there had been no main shut off. The new...
I’m on the NTC electrical course which is the most unprofessional thing I’ve seen and unfortunately I’m stuck with until I pay it off, I feel I’m gaining zero knowledge and feel like the tutors don’t give a dam, is anyone else on this stupid course and if so can share any info I’m what they...
Hello
I am adding a couple of sockets to an old industrial installation. I am replacing the existing sockets and adding two more into the ring. The installation is earthed through the metal conduit and an RCB has been retrofitted to the circuit after the old style fuse board. Is it...
