I have a friend that owns a local restaurant. He's renting a building that is somewhere around 30 years old.
The building currently has a sign with lights above the signage on both sides, shining down to light up the sign. And there's a switch at the bottom of the pole that they can use to...
Hi, I’m adding a heat detector into my existing smoke detector system.
The new detector will be inspected and commissioned by an electrician, but I’m fitting it to the ceiling and running the cables to save time taken by a professional (their suggestion as they are very busy).
This is already...
Supposing I fit a metal light fitting, and I do a terrible job - and the live comes out from the terminal screw and hits the fitting, but it's well earthed - current will flow through the earth cable (hopefully) providing a circuit with less resistance than if I touch it.
When this is happens...

ive drilled a hole through the wall, put conduit through the hole to protect the cables and put a junction box over the holes. inside the house is mini trunking and single core cables. outside is swa.

New member, DIY homeowner here.
I bought a new in-ground 1HP 120v Harris pool pump (online) and had it installed by my pool maintenance company. A few weeks later it appears blown -- it hums when the power goes on -- but I removed the back and the shaft turns easily so I suspect wiring issues...
Hi all, have been to a bungalow (well half bungalow half building site at the moment) and the main supply is in the middle of the basement. The dno supply is coming from above so is hidden in a wall and then I can see it going through the loft to outside. It's a good 8 meter run. Has anyone come...
Half way through a kitchen refurb, clients are moving back in at weekend because of lockdown and i need to get some sockets and the oven working for them is this classed as essential work
Hi all
Question regarding the amount of cables through holes in joists. Is there a set amount that you should stick to, or does it not matter how many cables are through a joist hole. As long as there is movement in the cables, finger gaps side of cables, reason i asked as seen about 8/9 cables...
I'm looking to data points for Cat6 in a couple rooms through out my house. Plan is Patch Panel, though brushed panel, through eaves, terminating in a gang faceplate. I've got easy access to eaves so getting the cables from one wall to another should be easy enough.
The walls are...
I am currently doing a love job and found that the water pipes have 93.4v running through them? the problem i have is that this is intermittent, for about 5 mins at a time? so live for 5 mins then dead then live again? i wondered if anyone had advice before i take up floor and things. i thought...
I’m an apprentice and dropped a real clanger. Had spent hours chasing our rock solid walls and moved over to a thin plastered stud wall on the other side of the room. Was drilling a hole through the wall and applied too much pressure and broke out the other side, ruining a shower bathroom tile...
I've ran a coax cable through the trucking and patress box containing 230v dual gang socket. It's a satellite feed so does have 18v switching PS from the receiver. Is there anywhere in bs 7671 that says this isnt aloud?
Testing Ze (TNs) prior to fitting a small 2 way unit for a kitchen....disconnected main earth and my tester is flashing telling me polarity is wrong ( it’s not polarity as I can confirm that visually) so I reconnect the main earth and test straight to the external MET and get a reading.....so...
Curing the floorboard in room and the cooker cable that runs through a notch in the joist was cut. Through the grey cable and the tips of the brown and blue wires. Just enough to see the copper core.
whats best to do in this situation as obviously I don’t want to replace the whole cable
As it says really. When testing LE or NE resistance > 300M ohms but between L and N I was getting a reading of about 0.2M ohms. Could it be the BG cooker switch that has two neon lights that is the problem?
If it is, after shoving 500V dc through them, should I replace this erstwhile brand new...
I'm running one 12/2 wire through a wall and I ran into a structural column. It is 4 studs thick. Can I drill through this column to run my wire?

Just wanted to add that I'm trying to add an electrical outlet to the wall.
My tumble dryer blew up and since then my electric charge has gone to £1 a hour I’ve unplugged everything in my house but to no avail any advice other than seeing a electrician which I’m doing is it possible for the blow up and trip to have caused this electric bill increase
Hi, installed some circuits in a factory. The circuits were tapped off of a busbar that goes straight to the main switchgear. From this I installed a Chint RCD, which then goes to 2x Chint TP MCB and 1x Chint SP RCD. One of the TP MCB´s goes to red commando sockets and the SP MCB goes to blue...
